Thinking about going with an aux trans cooler for my 700r4 looking for input

in the thought line of keeping my engine compartment as Smooth as possible i am thinking of getting rid of my transmission cooling lines running off of the radiator and mounting an auxillary cooler under the cab on the inside of the frame rail , I am looking for input , Is this a good idea, will it keep my 700r4 cool enough, what brand/style/length, i have never used one before so just looking for some input !

I have heard both good and bad....I would not remove the radiator cooler lines, I would add an additional cooler to the system to help with the heat transfer. Dont chance it with a 700R4.

I used a 30' finned heat sink cooler on my truck without any problems (I've had the tranny checked twice) if I was you I would mount the cooler on the outside of the frame away from the exhaust.

Looks like a fitting for a heater hose with a threaded in plug. Is the plug plastic.

I would look for remote transmission cooler with an electric fan too make sure you get enough air flow.

Re: Thinking about going with an aux trans cooler for my 700r4 looking for input

I am building a 36 chevy street rod and just had a good discussion about this with my local and well established transmission shop. I want to do the same thing as you and asked the owner who has been in business over 30 years and he said running just the external finned heat sink type would be fine, and not a problem UNLESS I planned to drive the car in the winter. He explained that those finned style coolers will not allow the fluid to be warmed to the minimum operating temperature when it's cold out and that is not a good thing. Just something to consider.

Re: Thinking about going with an aux trans cooler for my 700r4 looking for input

It is agood idea to have the trans fluid warm up if you are going to drive it in cold weather. TruCool coolers work good. Their LPD series allows the fluid to flow through only a small portion of the cooler untill it warms up and then will flow through the rest of it. They come in all different sizes so finding one to fit is pretty easy. I am sure there are other brands out there that work the same too.
