Does your truck have family history?

The trucks that I own were all one-family owned trucks before I got them. I happened to be there when sadly, their family chain broke.
Just curious how many of you are the current guardians to the truck bought new by your dad, mom, grandpa, uncle, etc.?
It's one thing to have a cool old truck, but it's another thing altogether to ride around in a piece of family history.
Let's hear your story.

my grandpa first bough one in the 60's, it was a 60-63 chevy that he took to mexico. he still has it over there.. its kinda the reason why i really like these trucks. altho i still have not owned a knee knocker im still in the hunt.. obcourse as money permits.

My Dad bought it right off the lot in 62 I begged him for years he finally gave it to me when he could no longer drive it due to his bad knees with the clutch and no power steering. When i converted to power disc and auto trans he said he wanted it back

My Grandfather bought the truck new in '66... since then my Dad has driven it as well as my Uncle. I got it when I turned 15 and did a rebuild back then with my Dad. Now... it's getting a complete frame-off in memory of them.

I've had a lot of vehicles over the years... pretty much every one of them I said I'd never get rid of. As of now, that's only held up to 3 of them... but that's only cause I haven't got another new bike and new truck yet. LOL But the only truck I will never get rid of, is the '66.

Ours was a one family truck when we purchased it. The original owner bought it in retirement, added a camper shell and drove it gently the rest of his life. He left it to his nephew who drove it a short distance to work for 3 years until the engine needed to be rebuilt. At the time it was the most untouched, original GMC stepside I had ever seen.

I bought mine 23 years ago, does that count? it was a one family farm truck and looks absolutely nothing like it did when I purchased it for $300 with a cracked block.

My dad bought ours used in 1969 for $500 If I remember right. He eventually put a camper on it and I can remember going camping in it all my younger years. Eventually we upgraded to a motor home and sold the camper off the truck.

My dad let me drive the truck when I got my license and A few weeks ago (13 years later ) finally convinced him to sign the title over to me and let me fix her up. Drove her 440 miles home without any work needing to be done. Every time I went to visit I was sad to see more and more rust beginning to form on the body and I convinced him it needed work and I would do it.




I have 4 kids (3 girls, 1 boy) + 1 on the way, So far my oldest daughter seems to have her eyes set on it:

My dad bought mine for my younger brother and I inherited it when he was killed in an accident in 1999. I plan to pass it on to my son who is named after my departed brother, the uncle he never met. A more complete story can be found in my "build" thread.

My grandfather bought the 1966 stepper new, then gave it to my dad to drive to school, then my dad passed it to me when I was 16.
the 1984 my grandfather bought new and he gave it to me this past july.

I love driving both of them. I daily drive the 84.

I have been around these trucks since I was 8. My father grew up in Montana with a 1960 apache 235/4sp and my parents bought a 63 in 1987. It was the first vehicle that I drove, learned to drive a clutch on the truck, got my license on it, parents gave it to me when I was 16 for a birthday gift because I had always been in love with the old 63. I have alot of stories from the endless nights and weekends that me and my buds spent out cruising, or looking for the next project, turning wrenches or looking for girlfriends (have more stories of this and the truck, but probably not forum material). I have owned a few of the 60-63's over the years...and currently own and drive my 63 daily. My grandfather helped turn wrenches on it with me until his passing last fall at 86. I dont have much family history with this particular truck other than the last three years, but the 1st gen c-10's have always run deep in our family. I plan to teach my 15 year old niece to learn to drive a clutch in the 63 in another month or too, and my 2 1/2 yo niece loves the "big truck" as much as I do. Hopefully myself & the truck will be around when they are adults to enjoy it even more with them.

My Grandfather purchased the truck new, when he passed away he left it to my Dad and when my Dad passed away he left it to me. The title has never been changed so it is still basically a one owner truck, when I pass away I'll leave it to my Son.........

My '62 has been in the family since the mid 70's. My first cousins (from my Dad's side), Ray and Dan bought it together back then and traded it back and forth amongst themselves. Around 1978, when Ray had it, he subframed it with a '73 front suspension and a '72 rearend. Making it 5-lug, disc fronts with power steering... making it 'ahead of it's time'. Anyhow, Ray sold it to my uncle Wes (on my Mom's side) who later traded it to my brother Jimmy in '81. He kept it until around 2001 when he gave it to me. I have it still and have NO plans of ever parting with it... Here are some pics that I've posted before of the truck's different looks over the years.. In chronological order... 1975, 1982, 2001, 2003, present day...

I rode in this truck the day it was purchased new by my dad. It has been kept in a garage ever since it was new. He gave it to me a few year ago. It is my daily driver. About 110k original miles. Original except 2005 LS2 drive train, AC, and other modern mechanicals.

My Grandpa bought this truck new in 1965, used it on the farm and drove it when he was Sheriff. I have newspaper clippings from when he was Sheriff and hauled off old mattresses from the jail in it. My Aunts learned to drive in this truck. I got it from him around 1987 when I was 16. I worked one summer on his farm in trade for the truck. This photo is from the day I brought it home off the farm.

I even still have old "love notes" to my high school sweetheart ( which is now my wife of 22 years ) talking about the truck and how she can wash it and clean the windows while I get it running..... then we can cruise in it

The '66 C20 I am restoring into a C10 was bought by my wife's grandfather in Panama City in 1966. When he died it became my wife's fathers. 7 weeks before we were to get married Larry died in a car accident. My wife asked me if I wanted to restore the truck and I was eager. We have a picture of my wife when she was around 5 years old standing on the step side. I wanted to get the same picture of my daughter when she turns 5 but I am slightly behind. We'll see if I can make my goal.

My uncle has my grandpa's 65 4x4.
I again have my 65 I had from 1983 to 1987 that my grandma, uncle, brother-in-law, cousin, and others helped me work on. So I feel it has family history (memories).

My wife's dad bought the 66 around 1967 or 68 and used it on the family Ranch in Pendelton, OR. My wife, her sisters and brother all had there turn driving it to school and pulling the horse trailer to horse shows, once dad moved on to a newer truck. When they were through using it she got parked in the barn. So here comes the next generation, my nephew. He needs a truck, so he pulled the old girl out of the barn, blew the dust off, fixed this and that. He drives it for a year or so and then he wants something newer, so the old girl goes back to the barn. She sets there collecting dust for 10 to 15 years. In 2007, the wife and I decided to bring her home and give her a new life. The rebuilding, a little on the custom side, is getting close. We would really like my father inlaw to see the truck again. He is currently suffering from Parkinson's and dementia.

My 63 doesn't have any family history but my 68 does. My grandfather bought the 68 brand new from the local Chevy dealership. My dad learned how to drive in it and he and my mom dated in that truck. My grandfather died the year before I was born and my dad got the truck then. When I became old enough to drive it was one of the 2 vehicles I learned how to drive in. It became mine when I was in high school and I drove it as my daily driver until someone ran into it. I still have it but it needs to be rebuilt b/c it was wrecked.

My dad and I are getting ready to start a restoration on a 1960 GMC factory 4x4. He bought the truck in 1964. It was the truck that I learned to drive a manual tranny in. My mom was wanting him to get rid of it so I offered to buy it so I could keep it in the family. He called the other day and said I could have it. It is cool to see the excitement in the old guys face when we are working on it. For 70 he gets around pretty good and still can turn a wrench lol. This is a great thread thanks for letting me share.

My 66 came from my grandpa. He sold cars at the local McFall Chevrolet here in town and this truck was traded in for a new body style. Papa loved the truck and brought it home. They would take it out picking flowers and what not a lot. Mom has a lot of memories riding in it. After he passed the truck pretty much just sat for about 9 years untouched. The original I-6 block was cracked. So, after the engine was rebuilt I decided to have it painted. Had cool patina, but I like em shiny as well as papa did. (which is probably why all the paint was buffed off lol.) Anyhow, here's an old pic of him standing by it, and a new pic from today.
