Theft Prevention

I getting close on having the truck ready for paint and then comes interior, stereo and a/c. I'm wondering what you guys are doing along the lines of theft prevention.

In my case....I just leave it so unpleasant to look at, that folks just naturally move on to the next candidate...

The truth is....like the rest of us...the first line of defence is in the catagory of fire arms...
But to answer your question...
As we all understand....if they really want it....and you leave it unattended in a bad place...it's history.
For protection from the quick thief..I have two seperate disconnects.
The kind that are made for marine applications....I usually only use the one that's easy to get to....for a trip to the store or under a couple hours, in a public area. That one is just to interrupt the power to ignition.
I have a larger one...High Amp...harder to get to that cuts main power from the battery. That's for parkin overnight...or fishing trip, or whatever.
Niether of them are that effective, if someone really wants it. But they will slow a thief down...make it more difficult for him.

I have a chain lock on the hood, the gas filler is locked under the bed cover, and a Hotronics remote master disconnect cuts off the electrical every time it’s not being used (even in the garage). I like leaving the truck electrically dead because it cancels any potential electrical problems unless I’m present to witness the issue. Keeping the battery and gas secure can at least help you from being left stranded if either it stolen or tampered with.

As Rockdriller points out these are only deterrents. The best protection is keeping it in a locked garage every night and not taking it to high risk locations and leaving it unattended. Since mine is a retired hobby truck now that’s pretty easy, but when it was a full service driver it wasn’t quite so simple.

A removable steering wheel might also be a good deterrent if you have someplace to lock it up.

I use 3 disconnects.

Under the hood I have a battery disconnect and a coil disconnect.

And on the inside I have a fuel disconnect switch.


For quick trips and just running around, I just use the fuel disconnect.

I also installed a Lo Jack device during the reconstruction of the truck.

I plan on adding all 4 to my 60 panel as well when the time comes.

I would say that anyone with a budget that can stand it....Nothin like Lo-Jack.
That's the state of the art, and as close to tweaker-proof as you can get, and if you combine that with these simple deterrants....you might be able to keep yer truck from being jacked.
The sick truth....there is definately a black market for these vintage trucks overseas...where they are less likely to be found through conventional methods.
Take yer truck, stick it in a 20' container...an she's gone for ever.

If it's four on the floor like mine, the gear shift comes right out. You can pack it around with you as added protection to hit any bad guys that might approach you.

I here that the lock that goes between your floor boards and you break pedal are extremely difficult to get off.

Usually just the keys and a few firearms lol....but I have a rope-lock for the hood, and my ecm is on quick mounts so one bolt and its out in about 20 seconds for leaving it somewhere for a few nights.

On one of my last builds 03 chevy avalanche layd frame on 27"s with complete stereo. I had three hidden keys.

what was unique about them was that its not just a switch you can hit, it required a special hex key to turn. I did one for the fuel cell, one for ignition, and one for main battery. Each was hidden.

Since it was my daily driver I hid two inside the cab. I installed a escalade center console, and in the bottom it had a rubber black cd case, under that i hid two of them.

It was annoying but after 6 break-ins no one ever got the truck only a few amps or subs every now and then!!

Poor man low jack; Get one of those inexpensive track phones that you have to load minutes on, then plug the track phone's GPS into your smart phone app. Then hide the phone somewhere on your truck so that you can keep it charged up at all times. Even if the thieves unplug the battery you still have a couple of days before the cell phone goes dead. I am going to hide mine in a dummy section of heater ducting, it has to be somewhere that even if they were taking your stereo they would not notice it until you show up with the police.

This way if your son or daughter ever use the truck you will know where they are.

I've used the cigar lighter as a 'hidden' switch. Disconnect the hot wire from it and connect the ground wire from fuel pump relay to the terminal on the lighter. Push it in and the fuel flows, pull it out and nothing.
Also works when attached to the negative side of the coil. Push it in and it grounds the coil so the engine won't run. Pull it out and it runs normal.

Well, Robert....I like that idea....
The problem is....I swapped my SM420 fer a TH400....with a column shift.
I guess I could just use my drive line.

I had a bagged 62 Belair and it was wired so you HAD to have the parking lights on for car to start/stay running.
Everyone always thought I was trying to be cool with my running lights on all the time...

X2 on this one this is the route I will take .. Lots of guys with motorcycles use this method and as long as it is hidden well the next thing the theif sees it blue lights... or my .45

I went with a hydraulic clutch and have the manual bracketry remaining - the one that connected to the pushrod and keeps the clutch pedal shaft located. I welded a bracket to the inside of the firewall right next to it with a corresponding hole for the original linkage.

Park the truck, put a padlock through the brackets and nobody will be able to operate that clutch. And that's assuming they can find the tricks to get the engine started.
