There are several reasons to replace your worn and corroded ground straps. And there are also several reasons for original and restored trucks.

Alright, so on trucks that are original; the connections between each body panel have most likely formed rust and are not a bare metal to bare metal connection. Without the utilization of ground straps, the cab, box, frame, front clip etc cannot share a good ground with the negative terminal on your battery. By replacing the worn or missing ground straps, you are allowing your entire vehicle to be properly grounded for many benefits. Such as; Increased radio reception (AM radios), brighter lights (Tail, marker, cluster, interior, etc) due to having a good ground therefore lowering the resistance, and the list goes on.

The key here is to provide your electrical grounding system with a path of low resistance. Corroded or worn out connections, create high resistance and that is when you will start having problems. Even on freshly restored trucks, the connections between each body panel have paint on them and are not bare metal to bare metal, so in that case you will have higher resistance and will not reap the benefits of a good grounding system throughout the vehicle. By having each major body panel grounded to the frame (Box, Cab, Firewall, engine, etc) you are ensuring that the negative terminal from the battery is reaching all the grounding points that need good bare metal grounds a path of low resistance. I could go into further depth if you'd like, but in a nutshell the ground straps make sure that your electrical system is up to par.
