Hypertech Distributor ???

I'm debating on whether or not to get rid of this hypertech and get a direct replacement HEI...has anyone used the hypertech, if so...what do ya'll have to say about them? I've never ran one before, and the PO installed one on my 67' with a 350sbc...he never had the timing down right...i know this cause it was way off and i could advance/retard timing by looking at the dizzy wrong...(yes it was that loose)

I just don't know much about the Hypertech dizzy and was wondering if anyone had some experience with them.

Jack

Re: Hypertech Distributor ???

I've fixed more than a few of them when they died. Curves are just plain archaic.

Re: Hypertech Distributor ???

my advice would be just go to the local parts stoor and pick up a dizzy frem accell or msd for $130 and replace it. i have bought engines with the hypertec dizzy and i didnt like them at all and most gave out about 5500rpm. as 454 said i find the curve on them junk. or pita just my opinion though.

Re: Hypertech Distributor ???

i'm having anxiety trying to stab a new distributor without pulling the motor...looks like the guy that swapped the motor took out the v6 and put the new 350 v8 in the v6 position...the fire wall looks like **** because he used a ball pin hammer to clearance the firewall for the dizzy. so the motor is sitting a few inches aft of where it should be. I was thinking either accell or hei for the new dizzy...just wondered if anyone else thought hypertech was junk, because bench racing with my buddies about it...they all agree i should replace it

There are alternatives to the bashing, small body HEI.

Re: Hypertech Distributor ???

well any seasoned mechanic would have been able to tell that the 350 was mounted in the v6 rail position, and they could have determined a small body, but when i picked this truck up originally, he was running it open carb cause his air cleaner (full size) wouldn't fit due to the Hypertech...i just slapped a smaller air cleaner on it and works fine...just didn't wanna have to pull a dizzy so soon. oh well. not a big deal, just hope i don't have to curse at it too much.

Re: Hypertech Distributor ???

Don't the small-body HEIs not have an advance curve? I thought all the factory GM ones were meant to work with some type of EFI or TBI and didn't have an advance curve.

Or do you mean some kind of aftermarket small-body HEI?

Re: Hypertech Distributor ???

Yes, the STOCK GM small diameter HEI IS a locked out EFI-HEI, for OEM fuel injection setups.

I am speaking of an HEI built into a stock point distributor body, NOT a "drop-in" kit system (which AREN'T HEI at all, they are PerTronix, Com-U-Fire, Mallory Unilite, Mallory magnetic inductive, Breakerless, Crane, etc.), but a real, live HEI.

Re: Hypertech Distributor ???

Where's the best place to find a small body HEI for my setup?
