Re: anybody here running Large port vortecs on there SBC?
I never have, but thats a stout set of cylinder heads you got there. If I remember right they flow around 250cfm on the intake side @.500 lift, and peak at 280 cfm @.600 lift out of the box. Pretty impressive considering they do it with a 2.00 intake valve.
I'd like to have a set of them myself. Posted via Mobile Device

Guys, the heads he has are Gm performance parts Bowtie vortec heads. They are not the same vortec heads that came on the 350's.

Re: anybody here running Large port vortecs on there SBC?
I have a set, planning to run 'em on a 406. What are you going to do about an intake? A typical Vortec won't fit, there's not enough meat to port it to fit. I found a single plane that's made for 'em, but it will still require removal of almost 1/4" of material just to match 'em.
Yours should have the "D" shaped exhaust port, that was one of the last refinements they made. |

Re: anybody here running Large port vortecs on there SBC?
or i could save the time and money, buy GMs large port vortec dual plane aluiminum intakes specially made for these heads. Dart has some heads that are similar, 2.02 int. 1.60 exh. And 72 cc chambers for flat tops, they produced 525 horses with there heads on SHP 400, one of these days ill have one!! 1500 bucks for a roller 400! Hell yea!! But anyway what im trying to say is they have heart shaped chambers, and raised ports. They did have a dual plane intake however. But the single plane put the most out so far, maybe thats my root to start with is a single plane.... But i only have a cast steel crank!!

Re: anybody here running Large port vortecs on there SBC?
Well, the single plane was supposedly made for these as well but will require a good bit of grinding to match the intake ports of the heads. I haven't seen one of the dual plane intakes, I'd like to see if they have larger ports than the single. With this size engine and the amount these heads will flow, I don't think you'll lose enough on the bottom end with a single plane, it might actually make it more streetable by moving the torque band higher.
As for the ability of the parts to handle it, I've known a lot of guys with factory crank and rods that spun 'em higher than 6K! |

Re: anybody here running Large port vortecs on there SBC?
Those heads are well under a grand...AFR's are well over 2 grand. With a little tweaking, these will make as much power as most factory 400 blocks can handle.

Re: anybody here running Large port vortecs on there SBC?
One of the mags did an article on this vortec head. Not the 062 or 906 (good budget heads also) but the higher end GM Bowtie Vortec. They rated them high and are a little more heavy duty than the original vortecs . Also the valve train stuff is ready to go . You don't hear a lot about them as they kind of get lost in the overflowing head world right now. A lot of people are buying the cheap chineeaey aluminum heads thinking silver is better. The chineeasy copycat a good set of heads made in the U.S. but even copycat the name to unsuspecting buyers. I would take these over any chineeasy head and may be one of the best iron heads out there. With that type of flow number and most any cam on a 400/406 sbc would be awesome. Type in 406 Chevy Impersonator on Google .Should find a Chevy High Performance build. Sub this pair of heads for the original vortecs or in their second build the AFR's (like to have a pair but cannot afford) and think what you would have. Buy a few sets of tires . You will need them.
