what do i set timing at

converted 5.7 to carb because i didnt have wiring or board to make work in my truck, everything runs ok ,but trying to set the timing, i resd to set timing at 0 on one site then set at 4=6 before tdc on another , on old 350 the timing is set as much as 14 degree tdc, so what should timing be set at?

Re : Proper Ignition Timing ~ SBC

This is a total can of worms as there's so many variables but in general , you set the timing to a good smooth idle then go test drive it and @ 35 MPH in top gear , level road , you tramp the throttle and listen for ping or knock ~ if none , pull over and advance the idle timing two degrees and drive it again , repeat until you hear it ping under load then back the timing off *just* enough to stop the ping .

That's how God and General Motors designed it to be done but this takes time and effort so few ever bother .

Re: what do i set timing at

i am starting to think the same thing, there is no "set" timing , just set to where it feels right
