On the way to pick up a 72 GMC Step

Hi from Texas,

New to the forum and excited to learn more from all of you. I'm currently in route to Missouri to pick up a 72 GMC step. Wish me luck on the 900+ mile trip back to home. No A/C this time of year should be fun.

Hi Wayne,

Heading to Columbia. The Jimmy has spent it's entire life no more than 30 miles from there.

Re: On the way to pick up a 72 GMC Step

Thanks to all of you for the warm welcome.
I'm new to these trucks so I'm sure I'll have a lot of normal questions, so be easy on the nube.

Most of my time has been spent on first gen camaros and C6 corvettes.

How do you think an Orange 72 Jimmy will look pulling my 69 Z10 camaro?

Are you driving or flying there, and when are you going? I'm in OKC and need to get some doors to OKC from Lubbock. I'll throw in some gas money if it works out.

Regardless, welcome!

Zoomin,

I'm actually in Chicago on business and will be flying to St. Louis Wednesday, then heading out. If I can pick something up for you let me know. Don't mind dropping off in Lubbock, my daughters are there.

Re: On the way to pick up a 72 GMC Step

Well, I picked up the truck late this afternoon and have stopped for the night in Wichita.

The truck is very nice. Was a frame off back in 2004 and has been garaged ever since. I need to do some minor interior stuff and add a radio, but it's really pretty well done.

I got about 25 miles out of town and started getting a bad shimmy about 65mph which wasn't there when I started. Stopped the truck and looked at the tires, all looked fine. Took off again and the shimmy starts getting worse. Now I'm driving 35mph on an interstate and fear the worst. Then it let's go, I've got a freaking flat tire! I do have a spare, but no jack and no tools.

So, 5 miles later I take the first exit, where I see a DQ, at least I'll have something to drink while I figure this out. The tire is shredded now.

The I see it, the heavens have opened up and i spot the sign "TRUCK REPAIR", what are the chances that this is where I would stop in the middle of no where Missouri? Now what are the chance that they are open at 7pm?

God is with me today. They are, nice guys, who stop what they are doing and change the tire. $10 and 10 minutes later all is well with the world! So, if any of you happen by exit 85 on IH 70, say hello to Mike for me.

Now, 5 hours of sleep and I'm off for the final 600 mile leg back to West Texas in the morning.

You can already tell that you have a great truck, took you where you needed to be to get straightened out. Hold a picture of the camaro up in front of those headlights so the truck knows what it's job is going to be....you shouldn't have any more trouble on the rest of your trip. Don't laugh! These trucks have a soul. Your truck should also tell you what it's name is going to be by the time you get home.

Funny Reno! I'll go take that camaro pic out there tonight.

Yep, you're right, the trucks name is "Crush"

Update on the balance of the trip maybe tonight.

No, found it on ebay. The pics weren't very good and not many of them. But when I saw the tear down pics during the resto and the fact that it had been garaged ever since, I decided to take a chance. Glad I did.

I made it back to West Texas around 6:30pm Thursday evening. All went well for the balance of the trip.

Gave me sometime to learn the truck and determine what I was going to do moving forward.

some observations:

The Bad
It's freaking hot in August driving 900 miles with out A/C
This pig sucks gas. About 11mpg.
Used 1.5 quarts of oil in 900 miles. Not good.
Not having a radio, sucks.
Don't drive on 10 year old tires no mater how much tread they have on them
You only get a tan on your left arm.
Exhaust manifold leak is annoying
Crappy black mouse fuzz seat cover.

The Good,

This truck has a great paint job, inside and out.
New Carpet
Vey clean engine compartment
New Exhaust, (go figure the manifold leak)
Runs very well
New Windshield
A great platform to take to the next level

What's ordered as of Sunday evening:

Vintage Air A/C
Cigarette lighter, for cell phone.

What I'll be doing soon.
Boss 338 Wheels 18"
New 18" 255/55 x18 tires. Not sure yet what I'll buy
New Black Houndstooth seat covers and seat foam
New inside mirror
New Hidden Radio sound system
Replace intake manifold and holly carb, with Edelbrock
New Shorty headers
New Wood bed
New chrome rear bumper
