Attempting the "$50 paint job"
After reading all the threads on the internet about the $50 paint job using Rustoleum I figured I'd give it a shot. My paint is beat and I wanted it a different color always so what the hell right?
They have a color called "Sand" that's very close to GM Sante Fe tan, which happened to be the color I wanted. Should get started laying down the first layer after lunch. |

Re: Attempting the "$50 paint job"
I painted mine with a roller and brush last fall. The slight texture I got was helpful in hiding some of the body imperfections, since my truck had significant rust beforehand. I did sand the rusted areas and apply a brush-on rust converter. I did not thin the paint at all prior to application, which limited it's self-leveling properties. I see that you are spraying the interior and jambs, guessing your plan is to spray exterior as well? Looks like you have a great start.
I was not able to really apply any wax/sealer as I finished my painting the weekend before the winter weather hit last fall. I would suggest soem type of application once your paint cures, I'm probably going to hit mine with another coat here this fall, and hopefully get that done as well. But overall I was surprised at how well the paint held up even thur our harsh winter months here in Minnesota. EDIT : here's a pic of mine. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...1&postcount=55

Re: Attempting the "$50 paint job"
No, gonna roll the exterior due to the said self leveling of the paint. I just figured spraying the interior and jams would be easier.

Re: Attempting the "$50 paint job"
I always use duplicolor. Seems to lay better and doesn't wrinkle itself with multiple coats. Lay down a clear as well so the paint don't oxidize

What are you using and what mix ratio are you using to thin out the paint?

Re: Attempting the "$50 paint job"
Looks good so far, also thinking about htis for my CC, same color also. My friend at work just did his F@rd van, not sure he thined his, def has a texture, a little to much for me. It kind of reminds me of a refriderator door type texture.

Re: Attempting the "$50 paint job"
I started this, this weekend as well... mine went on A LOT thicker than that tho lol...
one coat cover mine pretty well... though I mixed it at 4:1 with xylene, I'll sand it down tomorrow then probably do the other coats 3:1 by weight shootin' for a 20/20 finish..

Re: Attempting the "$50 paint job"
Ha! Awesome. If you check the thread in my sig for my 78, I also used home depot's sand color for my cab. It is very close to the factory buckskin color.

Re: Attempting the "$50 paint job"
Wow, this is coat 4 and it's really starting to take shape:
There are still some thin spots, tomorrow morning I need to finish coat 4 (it rained shortly pretty heavily during coat 4, NO ILL EFFECTS TO THE PAINT, even though it was wet! This rustoleum is amazing) then wet sand again. I'll keep updating. |

Re: Attempting the "$50 paint job"
It's actually VERY slight. I found a really good technique of applying, I follow the body lines going vertically, make 2 passes over roughly 2ft area. I can see it self leveling and it leaves no lines.

Re: Attempting the "$50 paint job"
What's the recoat time that you are allowing between coats. I have always heard that the window was 30 minutes or then wait 24 hrs. Does mixing the thinner/paint at 50/50 ratio shorten the recoat time between coats?
I am planning on doing the same thing to my truck. I can't afford a $1000 paint job on my work truck. It just needs to be the same color all over. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Attempting the "$50 paint job"
You guys do realize that rattle cans have no hardeners in the paint,,,,it will scratch and chip extremely easy,,,and has no real UV resistance either. It will fade within a month or two of being in the sun.
I take it this is just a beater? |
