Need some help. Gas cap related question

Guys and gals,

I am having some issues with my new to me 68 C10. It runs fine for a short while then under normal RPM's it starts to fall on it's face. Just cuts out completely and bucks in 3rd and fourth.

It has new plugs, wires, dist. cap, rotor and a bunch of other new things.

My question is that is has a heavy gas smell. I noticed that the seal ring inside the gas cap is half gone. Could this be the problem? Could the gas cap not be sealing correctly?

Any other thoughts are appreciated. I would love to get this thing on the road.

I think that the '68 requires a vented gas cap, I know that my '67 does.

The issue does sound like a fuel delivery issue, and may be as simple as the fuel sock on the pickup of the sending unit has collapsed/fallen apart/broken up and is restricting the fuel pick-up.

Where are you smelling gas the most? In the cab? Near the filler hole?

Yeah it should have a vented cap, I would look to a filter or the sock being pluged up as well for a starting point.

Okay. I do not know if it is vented or not. I will go look. Where is the fuel filter located?

I smell gas inside the cab mostly.

You probably shouldn't assume whether it's vented or not, and I'm not sure how to tell just by looking at it, usually the ones I've seen are marked Vented or Non Vented.

Anywhoo,

The fuel filter (If there's only one), will be in the inlet of the carb. There may also be one in the line before the carb, and after the fuel pump.

In order to check the fuel pickup in the tank, you'll need to pull out the sending unit in the tank to check it. There's plenty of posts regarding that process, so a quick search will help you tremendously.
