1959 4 speed auto tranny

Hello all I recently fell in love with a 59 fleetside that has the big back window and the 4 speed auto tranny. I really prefer manual transmissions, but I may not be able to pass this truck up. can anyone tell me about this tranny? Is it reliable? ANything to be concerned about? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Regards,
Mark

If it is original, it should be a Hydra-matic. I don't know much about them but if it works, it should keep working. There is probably lots of info on the web.

If it is a Hydromatic (usually found in GMC's) it is pretty well indestructible, if you ever have to lift one out you will know why. My dad had 57 bus with one in it and they were used for racing in the 50's. But if you need to repair it, it is cheaper to convert to a more modern trans, parts are very expensive.

Re: 1959 4 speed auto tranny

Thanks for the replies guys. The seller tells me the tranny is original to the truck which is a 59 fleetside. Are these trannys rare for this truck? How could I tell if it really is the original hydromatic or just a more modern tranny?
