Re: 4x4 axle questions

The 76 K20 8 lug axle I used has a wms to wms (after I narrowed it 4.5") of 60" The stock 44 spring perches are 32" center to center.

The first link is from the Dana site. find what axle you have and what it came with from the factory. And find other part numbers to narrow your 44.
Next read the second site for how they narrowed a 44.

I like the wheels inside the fenders look.

Re: 4x4 axle questions

cobinder

what spring hangers are you using?

i located a set of 8-lug dana 44 front and 14FF rear that think i'm going to use. do not know what year they are nor any measurements, but i'm sure they will need to be narrowed and i'll need to move the springs out to be able to attach them to the perches.

will know more as soon as i'm able to go and look at them

Re: 4x4 axle questions

48 my truck is an International so the mounts are going to be different, but the process is the same.

a Chevy Dana 44 has the passenger u bolt mount cast in the the pumkin housing, you can't change this mount. Everything mount and alignment wise is based on this point. Measure from here to figure how much you want to narrow your 44. You don't have to shorten the 44 the same on both sides. For example if you determine where the pass mount is placed (with the leaf spring mounts you've come up with) the pass wheel sits where you want it. But the driver wheel sits 3-1/2" out further. you'll only have to shorten the drivers side of the axle that 3-1/2". Once you determine what you need to (based on the mounts you get) look at the dana site and see what inner axle fits the closest to the length you want. You can save costs by using these existing inner axles.

On the 14 bolt, if the spring perches that are on the axle don't fit your leaf spring spacing, just cut the old mounts off and weld new ones in the position that you want them in. Then you have to decide how to get the amount of lift you want, blocks, new springs, shackle etc.

Re: 4x4 axle questions

45-72 was the corporate drop out, the predecessor to the 14 bolt. Same guts, looks like a 8 bolt beefier 9". Superb axle in its day, easy to fin an and with 4.10,4.56 and 5.13 gear ratios
