Thinking about ruining my truck...

I'm not happy with it anymore. I painted it back in 2006 and it just doesn't look good to me anymore. It's collected a few small dings, chips, a couple small bubbles have popped up, and I'd almost rather "patina" the old girl than try to keep her really nice. It looks way nicer in pictures than in person, I'll be the first person to admit that. I do, however, have a mustang that is nicer in person than in pics.

My dad loves Pontiac so I was thinking of some kind of Buick/Pontiac/Chevrolet service truck. Just a simple door logo with some lettering on the bed (sales, service, parts, etc?). I'd like to go with a medium flatish blue with MILD "patina". I don't want the rust look, but more old paint with a little "primer" showing. And I've always wanted a truck with CST trim.

You may be thinking, that would look strange on a stepside... it sure would. I have a short fleet bed for the truck.

Just curious if anyone has "ruined" their truck and wanted to go back? I'm not talking about a truck that was patina in the first place, but a nice truck. The patina process requires kinda thick paint and I don't think it would be fun to remove it all later.

I will leave the truck itself alone for quite a while. If I do anything, it will be on the "spare" bed first to test it out. Just throwing out what I've been going over and over and over in my head.

Oh... and a drop will finally be in order... something like a 3/5.

The "nice" toy I WILL NOT be touching

Re: Thinking about ruining my truck...

If you arnt happy with it, then go for it. Turning it into a shop truck will be cool. You can do your door logos and shoot it with some flat clear. Use extra flattening agents on areas that would be high wear or areas that would have more sun damage like the roof and hood and tops of the fenders. Keep those wheels and throw on some skinny whitewalls and you will have a COOL looking truck!

Re: Thinking about ruining my truck...

I think it's too nice of a truck to 'shop truck' ... or Faux-tina, etc. Yeah it looks cool on the right truck but think about how you worded the post. "I'm thinking abour ruining my truck" That gives me the mindset that you'd kinda feel that way after it was finished. (??) Just trying to help with reasoning. It's yours, do what you wish.. I'm a firm believer.

How about a 4/6 drop and some Billet wheels? Nothing crazy / bagged just a clean up to date look. Not saying 20's .. just something a little different?

I'm into Photoshop too, post up some pictures at different angles and maybe the wheels you like (steelies, Coys, Billets, makes no difference to me) .. What do you like? I can give you some ideas on what it would look like in different trims, different ride heights, etc.

Re: Thinking about ruining my truck...

I, for one, am truly happy to hear you say that your truck looks worse in person, and you'd like to take a different route. Nothing against your truck though. Too often people try to "hang on" to their paint job, for whatever reason, but are left rubbing the paint thin while the rockers rust away. I'm all for going shop truck, as I will myself when I'm to that point. Beautiful paint sure looks nice, but quickly turns average if the utmost care isn't taken. Good luck with your choice!

Re: Thinking about ruining my truck...

I agree with CC69Rat. I would leave the paint as is(fix the "bubbles" though) and update it with drop and wheels. I've always been more for the patina'd shop truck look than rat rods, but I'm not that big on "fauxtina".

However, if after drop and wheels, you still want a different look, I personally would just go over the truck with a fresh coat of blue with a flattened clear. Please don't go fleetside, though. The stepside is what makes it unique. I don't have anything against fleetsides, but more of them than steppers.

Your truck is nicer than you think. You just know every little blemish and see it as the blemishes rather than as the whole. But if you insist,go over the whole truck with a scotch brite do the door logo and see what you think.Fi the bubbling while you're at it.If you like the look then use a flattened clear on it,if not then color sand and clear it.And for gods sake man, keep the stepper!!!JMHO Jessie.

Re: Thinking about ruining my truck...

You can also wash it in Ajax about 5 times and it will have a more 'satin' look to it.

But really, .. I like it as is. It would look killer with some big Billets on it though.

Re: Thinking about ruining my truck...

Wow, lots of great comments! I've ALWAYS wanted a short fleet, even since the day I bought it, one of the biggest reasons was so I could install 67/8 CST trim, I love how it looks.

I was that 16 year old kid once, this was my very first vehicle. Never hurt her too bad.

I know you've seen her in person quite a few times, so I really appreciate that Deland! I didn't say I wouldn't keep the stepper.... it's going to make a hell of a nice trailer!

She does sit outside, has been since I bought it in 1996. She got to be in a garage for about 2 years before I bought the Mustang this year and had to kick her out

It also looked like this for the first 10 years I owned it. It didn't always look that bad, it was kind of a nice looking flat black for 4 or 5 years then it started to look like crap (it was just a primer with a sealer in it).

I also really liked this local truck I saw over the summer ("original patina" with a repainted white top):

Nothing is set in stone. I was also considering hot rod flatz blue/white top and a little bit of pinstriping.

I do have a couple extra parts (fenders) I may try out my technique on. I may even do the whole fleet bed and see how I like it before it goes on the truck! Change is only a flap disc away!

I also can't try it out on the paint is has now. It's a single stage metallic. I had to respray the front end (wasn't happy with it) when it was first done and sanding the metallic single stage looks terrible.

The drop is coming. The big wheels will not be. I love my 15" rallys and caps.

You guys are awesome. I can tell that some of you are in the politest way possible begging me not to, but she's been mine for 16 years and hopefully another 30 or 40, she may be a few more versions before someone else finally gets their hands on my baby.

FWIW, I worked my way through college at a local fix-it garage. The local mom & pop auto parts supplier delivered parts in a '69 short wheel base stepside. It didn't have CST trim but it did have a 396.

I wouldn't think it was strange at all.

If you just drop it change the wheels and dont do anything to the paint it will be alot cooler than any so called shop truck..

Re: Thinking about ruining my truck...

I am not a true fan of black and patina. If you have a truck where hte paint looks old and the base coat is showing through, then athat is a whole new apple to deal with. Look at Holley's shop truck and see what I mean. It has a Gen III engine under the hood with the faux coil covers that makes it look like a big block.
