I picked up this nice 68 project from a fellow boardmember Shifty for my son Jake a little less than 2 years ago (thanks for the great deal Jason, ). Our plans were/are for a father and son project. One of the main reasons I got it is that Jason had already done a ton of work to it, so most of the hard work and planning had already been done. Here's a link to his thread that shows all of his progress:

http://ls1tech.com/forums/conversion...-stepside.html

Our plans are to keep close to what Jason had orginally planned for the truck, but with a few small "variations". He had bought a fairly orginal 68 short stepper that had an older restoration (the cab on this truck is nicer than the on on my brown/white 68!). He installed a nice low mile LS1/T56 and had planned on bagging the truck with a basic air ride suspension.

We plan on sticking with the drivetrain (the T56 should be fun!). Our variations are as follows:

Switching the stepper bed for a fleetside
A complete Porterbuilt front and rear dropmember setup (thanks Mike Baker!).
Swapped Autometer gauge setup for a set of Dokata Digital VHX gauges
A set of buddy buckets (of course, )
A set of 20's (probably Coys?)

Jake likes the patina look, so we're leaving the paint as is for right now. Plans are to get it running and driving for his 16th birthday (we've got a year and a half). Eventually we may tear it back down and repaint it. I'll try to keep you updated as we go.

Here's some original pictures of when Shifty first got it.

Thanks Keith. I think it will be a perfect "starter" truck. Sorry I missed you at CTC, I was in Dallas at the time (go figure). Here's some more pictures of the chassis. We still have some welding to finish up and I need to test fit the motor and tranny, then we can blast and paint it. Hopefully things will speed up after that......

Re: Project "Shifted"

CTC was fun, I'm going back next year. Have you thought about mounting the tank on the top of the rails? With it that low if he lifts the front more than the rear it will hit.......ask me how I know.

What a fun project. I wonder what insurance will be like on that? No matter, he'll be cool at school for a ton less than the new Camaro kids.

Re: Project "Shifted"

NO WAY! I met Jason years ago. I sold him a set of 99-02 silverado seats, I take it he didn't throw those in with the truck? They were really nice too, charcoal and at the time low miles (I think around 70K on them.)

Two years ago? Man, I told him if he ever sold it to let me know! At least it's in really good hands now! I take it he never actaully got it running?

I guess I was in the right place at the right time and he gave me a deal I couldn't refuse. He did throw in the seats and a ton of other parts. I found a set of buddy buckets and sold the other ones. He did get it running and then tore it all apart to do the chassis and that's the way it sat until I bought it.

Well we made a little progress today. We almost got the front clip pulled off, so we can pull the motor/tranny out. Then we'll remove the old chassis so the cab will be ready to put back on the new frame once its blasted and painted. Speaking of drivetrain, since I'm going a different direction with my 68, my son mentioned putting the LS1 with the 4L60E in his truck. He likes the thought of paddle shifters (he got this from his XBOX or maybe TopGear????) and we found this cool setup online thanks to another boardmember:

http://www.tciauto.com/tc/shifters/paddle.html.

Has anyone tried this? Thoughts? He really likes the idea of a 6speed, but the paddle shifter is pretty cool. I gave him this week to think about it, because one of the engines has to go.

I also put one of the Coys wheels off of the suburban on his chassis. He really likes the way it looks, so we'll probably go that route. Here's some pics...
