What is a fair price for a the work I'm getting done.

Hey guys just wanted some of your opinions. I have a 68 gmc lwb 383 stroker th400. I have a couple leaks coming from the trans. Looks like the speedo cable a ****er linkage. It's automatic. Need to replace the oil pan gasket. Valve cover gaskets, intake manifold gasket, rear main seal. Wondering what the final bill should look like. I know all shop prices won't be the same but a rough estimate would be appreciated. I wish I could do all the work myself.

An oil pan gasket and rear main seal are a pain to do. The pan is close to the cross member in front .
350-400 would just about cover the intake and valve cover gaskets for parts and labor.
I would start there (top end leaks) and maybe the trans. Then wash it down and see if that solves most of your leaks, always start on top with the leaks.

i agree, i work on these all the time and all it takes is one snafu and your into it for more time, as far as the pan gasket and rear seal i'm not doing it for anything less then 350.00

Re: What is a fair price for a the work I'm getting done.

All depends on your location. In New York cost would be quite a bit higher than here in Texas.

Valve covers and transmission would be the easiest. Next would be the intake gasket. The oil pan gets a little more complicated since the engine mount bolts would have to be removed and engine lifted to clear the crossmember.

In these parts labor runs around $50 plus an hour. I would estimate around 5-6 hours at $60 an hour and cost including tax would be about $400 for labor in my area.

Most shops go by a standardized method of charging for the average length of time it takes to do a particular job. This is probably what you will see in your estimate.

Re: What is a fair price for a the work I'm getting done.

Thanks guys for all the helpful opinions. I'm out in Southern California. And I think I've found a very honest mechanic where I'm from. He gave me an estimate at first of 300. After a week of going at it he's trying to stay true to his word but might have to go up to 400. Which I'm totally fine with after seeing all the trouble he's been going to get my truck run smooth and leak free.

I go to a guy named George at sparkmans garage. It's off of jurupa going out towards van buren. I started going to him because he was the only mechanic who worked on diesels around my house. He's turned out to be a really honest guy and I recommend him to anyone out of riverside ca.

Nice build by the way. Im hoping if I troll around this forum long enough I can pick up a few things around here and start working on my truck myself. Where out in riverside do you reside. From the look of your pics it looks like your out in the la Sierra area but I could be wrong.

Ha I was close. Yeah I went through your build thread the neighborhood looked familiar. So you probably know exactly where sparkmans is at. It's off jazmine by Batmen towing. So what shop did you take your truck to get painted?

Here is a link to the California board in the Regions section: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/f...play.php?f=147

There are truck meets, mostly here in the IE.
