What do I coat my frame with?

Hey all, I am in the process of stripping down my 67 to frame, and I'm needing a quick question answered. What should I coat the frame with? I have seen them painted, but how durable is that going to be? My 67 isnt going to be a daily driver, but in the future I dont want any regrets because I went to cheap. Now having said that, this project is on a budget, so powdercoating will probably be out of the question. I have seen a buddy use the rustoleumn truck bedliner on his frame and bottom of his cab, but we havent seen any effects past a couple months yet. I thought for $7 a can it left a pretty nice, and durable surface. Any opinions on what I should do would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

Re: What do I coat my frame with?

I used an industrial (Alkyd Enamel)paint (used on tractors) from Valley Paint Manufacturing...my local paint store had it in stock and a few sheens to choose from.....best of all a gallon was 65.00.

Re: What do I coat my frame with?

POR15 worked great on mine. Get it good and clean with de-greaser. and they have some kind of prep process with a product called "metal ready". I got mine off of Amazon. After the POR15 I painted it with chassis black. The POR15 is not UV resistant and will "chalk" when exposed to sunlight. I typically dont park upside down but went ahead and topcoated it with chassis black for a better shine. DO NOT get POR15 on your hands. It will not come off.

Good topic. Im planning on sandblasting my frame suspension pieces. What is recomended for blasted metal? Ive heard por15 is for rusty frames.

Re: What do I coat my frame with?

About 3 quarts is enough paint unless you are talking more than one coat. POR 15 is what I used. For a daily driver Rustoleum would be fine but not from a spray can. A tractor supply outlet is another alternative.

if you are going the full route of sandblasting, I'd take the additional time to actually paint it vice por 15 it. painted just looks better. While POR 15 looks good, I've not seen many come close to the clean look of a blasted and properly painted frame.

Longevity? That's another question. If your truck is a hardcore daily driver, maybe POR 15 is a better choice.

I think HotRod C10's frame in post #2 looks VERY nice.

Re: What do I coat my frame with?

If it's blasted you should etch it with self etching primer and top coat. If just cleaned up with wire wheel then any paint will do. I personally wouldn't use POR 15. It's no better than Rustoleum. Look at the MSDS sheets. ll depends on what you going to do with the truck. If daily driver all year long then no matter what you use you should apply something over the paint from the time to time. Up here in New England we use oil. Just spray that stuff all over and it seeps in everywhere. I also have used LPS 3 corrosion inhibitor. Work excellent on my 79 that I plowed with for years.

Re: What do I coat my frame with?

Anyone wanna recommend me some brands for etching primer paint?

Im not real sure what the plans are yet. Rebuilding the front end with drop spindles and a bigger sway bar. Like to make a nice resto mod with LS engine but well see

Re: What do I coat my frame with?

Does anyone have any pictures of their frame coated with POR 15 for a visual? Like I said, my 67 wont be a daily driver at all, but I want something that will last, and give off that nice clean look. I plan to scrape what i can off, then degrease and power wash (repeat as needed) then take a wire wheel to it.

I use Dupont Vari-Prime. Been using it for years. I'm sure there are others equally as good but this is all I know.

GM Reconditioning paint. Same stuff GM used from the factory, is sprayable right out of the can and can be sprayed on bare metal.

Re: What do I coat my frame with?

I was happy with the POR-15. Cleaned and de-greased, then the POR-15 metal ready primer, then I just brushed it on and then top-coated it with rattle-can spray paint when the POR-15 was almost dry (finger-drag test).

Picture of my 71 with por15 on frame and suspension parts. Follow directions and it should adhere for a very long time. I went with high gloss but you have a lot of different options with por15.

I checked out the link in your build thread to the kbs website. Looks like a quality product that I might just have to try, thanks for the info.
