Door panel pockets

How well would painting a set of door panel pockets hold up? I am going to paint my door panels and want a new set of pockets, found a set i like not the right color. Just wanted some input on how well painting them would be.

Re: Door panel pockets

Two weeks? Insidious, you are an eternal optimist!

To answer your question, Nightster, you'd be better off going to an upholstery shop and have them fab up a set to match. I've tried the dye/paint route with the door pockets on my square and it was a complete and utter failure.

Re: Door panel pockets

i used SEM paint on my 83 C20 Silverado and it worked out fine. You likely won't use those pockets very much, so they won't get much wear. I also pulled the elastic strap taught on the back to make them close better. If you disassemble the pockets and lay the vinyl flat prior to painting them it will work.

SEM is what a upholstery shop would use

Re: Door panel pockets

SEM products is the way to go. Painted mine about 6 years ago and still look very good. Preparation prior to painting is the key.

Re: Door panel pockets

I painted/dyed mine 3 yrs ago and they still look great, had no issues with them. As stated in a previous post, they get no use and just hang out there on the door panel looking good.

Re: Door panel pockets

I actually snaked my out of a newer suburban in the junkyard. Exact same color and fit; however, the suburban ones have a flap that keeps the pocket closed. They maintain a low profile against the door too.
