Quiteing compressor?

I have a IR 60 gallon compressor with 5 HP motor on it and trying to get the sound level down when kicks on. Has anyone every tried the silencer tubes that they offer to do in motor? Is there any other reasonable and cheap solution that is clean and easy? Thanks in advance!

Hmmm. Build a closet around it? Put it outside?

ETsC10's solution is what I'd go with. Never tried silencer tubes.

I'm kinda like duct tape- no real purpose, but handy to have around.

Re: Quiteing compressor?

A compressor box works great for the sound but its terrible for the compressor. The compressor generates heat while it runs. If you build a box around it and trap all the heat the compressor wont last near as long as it should. If you have the space build a shed outside of your garage and put the compressor in the shed. Pipe the air into the garage but make sure the shed gets airflow.

Re: Quiteing compressor?

1. What is it sitting on. The wooden pallet that it came on is not made for installation use. I however have seen it used many times.if this is you you may be suprised by how much some rubber under the feet will help. Also if you anchor with bolts don't titen them. The machine needs to have some freedom to vibrate, or it will break something.
2. A better inlet silencer can be beneficial. First for noise, second to get you away from a propriatary ir filter. That will depend on the the model of machine you have.

3. If you can sacrifice a few cfm a smaller drive shieve can make it sound like a different animal. It will also make it live longer, and make cooler drier air. It will cost some cfm though.

Re: Quiteing compressor?

You can stop a lot of the noise by putting the intake filter outside or in an area where it is less noticeable.

Re: Quiteing compressor?

I got sick of getting ripped off for the specialty air filter so I adapted a 350 chevy breather, I was shocked at how much the noise level was lowered.

Can you expand on that? Sounds intriguing.

Re: Quiteing compressor?

take the factory plastic housing/aircleaner assembly off throw in trash.
put a new fitting on it, piece of 3/4 heater hose, valve cover breather.

or i have taken out the filter, and used red scotch brite, works well. a bit quiter, catches dirt really well.

but the best is get rid of that single stage compressor, and get a 2-stage compressor. soo much nicer.

Re: Quiteing compressor?

Getting rid of it is out of the question! Ok guys need some help here which silencer do I use on my IR SS5L5 compressor? Next when going through lines today trying to fix leaks and replum garage found my underground black pipe from other building was actually rotting away and it's only 3 yrs old! So guess I am going to move it in garage but want it quite as possible with out killing the unit. I will be bolting it to floor and using rubber pads under the unit, figure silencer anything else I can do besides build a box around it that might cause more harm then good? I would put it outside behind garage but doubt wife wants me building a shed around it cause that is only way I would feel comfortable with it outside. So any help here guys?????
