Question 72 Door Panel Repair

I have been trying to clean up a few 72 panels and I'm looking for tips on what to do with gouges in the plastic. What might you have tried that works?

Re: 72 Door Panel Repair

I actually sanded mine down until the surface was consistant, turned out pretty good. Used SEM adhesion promotor, color and low luster clear.

Thanks Mr Blue. My trucks pretty much made up of parts from 67-72 so everything is factory but nothing is correct

Re: 72 Door Panel Repair

Hey Hos, the turnaround is stunning! Are those the same panels??

Im only half joking though...was that scroll work above the the door and window handles revealed by removing the woodgrain trim piece? Also, in these pics I can't even tell where/how you were able to doctor up all those nics/scratches.

Nice job though, however you did it. Those panels look sweet.

Thinking out loud here, but wouldn't this be a good application for a soda blaster?

Yep. It works well on panels that are chalky. Removes the loose chalky stuff and still retains the underlying grain.

Re: 72 Door Panel Repair

Step 1. Clean with Orange pumice hand cleaner using gray or red Scotchbrite pad.

Step 2. Wipe down with Acetone.

Step 3. Apply a few light coats of Bulldog Adheision Promoter.

Step 4. Use SEM Bumper Repair #68422 to fill the gouges. DO NOT overfill the gouge.

Step 5. Use SEM Texture Coat #39853 - adjusting pressure for desired texture.

Step 6. Use Scotchbright pad to scuff high spots from surface.

Step 7. Apply light coat Bulldog Adheision Promoter.

Step 8. Apply light coats of SEM Color Coat top coat. Parchment is SEM #15103 Super White.

Step 9. Clear coat with SEM Color Coat - Satin Clear #13013

Step 10. Enjoy !
