6 Cylinder Engine I.D.?

I know this has to have been covered before somewhere here, but I can't find it. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

Re: 6 Cylinder Engine I.D.?

It's blue and the motor mounts that are even across. So I'm reading that as it a 230?

Re: 6 Cylinder Engine I.D.?

I somewhere have a link for i.d.ing between a 230 and 250 based on the numbers. If you'll look just behind the distributor, there is a flat pad that will have the id numbers stamped in it.

Re: 6 Cylinder Engine I.D.?

That website shows my casting numbers (3850817) to be either/or 230-250 for year '64-76. The number next to the distributor is F0811TA

I didn't see FO811TA on anyone's list. Does it sound familiar to anyone? Bueller?

Re: 6 Cylinder Engine I.D.?

The distributor stamping pad tells what the compression ratio was, accessories the engine had and where the block was cast. I thought the compression ratio might help in determining between 230 or 250. It seems to me the TA designation was St. Louis. I'll keep looking for the info that breaks those numbers down. Did you look at the piston tops as is referred to in the other post? That would tell you for certain. It is always possible the original paint was covered over as well. The parts for the 230 and 250 are interchangable.

Re: 6 Cylinder Engine I.D.?

The motor is running...runs great! A little tempermental when starting it for the 1st time of the day, but warms up good and idles like a champ, no oil smoke. Of course I'm sure, not knowing the history, that could all change with the turn of the ignition key. The other casting numbers that are further back on the block toward the firewall do indicate that it's Chevy either/or 230/250 and nothing special fromwhat I've found on the other websites.

But, thanks for your help! I'm learning more details about this truck everyday.

With the intake hanging out he side like it does on these there is a little problem with vaporization of the fuel from the carb...especially when cold. There is a little flapper on the exhaust manifold that has a spring that expands contracts with heat allowing the flapper to open or close. Make sure it is not binding. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll post a pic of mine.

That's great that you got it running. Those things sing like a sewing machine! Looking to see the piston tops or pulling the pan and checking the crank numbers is probably the only way to id between the 250 or 230. They are identical except for the piston tops and the stroke is slightly longer on the 250.

Good luck!

Re: 6 Cylinder Engine I.D.?

Hi all ... New guy and my first post ...
I have a recently purchased a basket case 1962 Chevy C10 Stepside ... I found the engine number as F0409PC. When I look at the charts there is no PC. It is defiantly a straight 6. I was told it was a 290 or 292.
Any ideas ?
F = Flint ( Motor )
04= month = April
09 = day = 9th
PC = ???
Thanks in advance for the help.

Do you have the Casting Number off the block?
Chevy Six Cylinder Casting Numbers can usually be found just above the starter on the "passenger side" of the block.
