Re: Best type of angle grinder

One of the pics that Tx Firefighter posted is one of the reasons I'll go out of my way to get a grinder with a paddle/deadman switch. Quickest way to get thrown out of a paper mill is pull the guard off, (seen it happen).

My Metabo is a 6", primarily made for 6" cutoff wheels. When I sold off my tools, there was no way I was going to re-coup my investment in it. So the other brands got sold and I kept it.

I'm kinda like duct tape- no real purpose, but handy to have around.

Re: Best type of angle grinder

those old 9 inch grinders used to buck and kick, but since they came out with the little 4.5 inch grinders i've never had one get away. they're to easy to stall out or for that matter throw away. paddle switches are a pain if you have to cut or grind in an unusual position. i guess it's all a matter of what you get used to.

So I've heard. Maybe I will rebuild this one and hand it down to my son.

Re: Best type of angle grinder

A friend of mine got a 6 amp 4.5in HF one and man that thing is awesome its only had one problem where he dropped it and it cracked the rear half of the housing which is 2 piece i believe and it wobbles back there but other than that its a great grinder but now he got a dewalt for xmas which is a 7 amp and is nice

I bought 2 ryobi 4.5in long handled version and by design i would go so far as to say they are superior in design to any other grinders ive used but their motors are so weak its upsetting im gonna buy another

All wired 4.5in grinders i have used
Makita - good power
Ryobi (4.4A) - great design but no power
Milwaukee (7A) - good power but where the head bolts to body will crack over time and its pot metal
Dewalt - good power, seemed heavier than the rest but nothing crazy
Metabo - good power *Same as the one posted i believe*

I don't know the amps on all of them but if it says good power i assume its 7A or above if i was to buy any of them again it would be the milwaukee even with its problem it just seemed to have crazy good power even if i put a lot of weight on it but i will go for a bigger amp like a 9, 10 or 11 amp

When you buy a chicago electric HF angle grinder, first thing you do is open the case and fill it with grease, my first one last over 7 years of daily work use.

That’s a good tip about Chicago Electric, How & the heck did you come with that fix on a brand new tool? Who would have thought ?

Like yourself I have known others who used the snot out of them, & others who were lucky to get one job out of them. No consistency in there quality……

What I like is all their tools come with spare brushes, not even name brand do that, as once the brushes wear out, they want you to buy a new tool.

But CE already bets the tool will out last it brushes, so they give a spare set with them. Shows confidence in their brand.

Re: Best type of angle grinder

I think the brushes are included because the CE armature is so loose in the housing that they will need to be replaced much sooner. I have a CE and a Makita and the CE is a chore to handle when using it for 1 to 2 hours at a time. The Makita is so much smoother in your hand far less vibration.
