64 StepSide - Let's the games begin
We are finally through the holidays and momma isn't going to be yelling at me every time I head out into the garage to spend time with the mistress. It's time to get this tear down in progress. Here's the passenger side with fender and step removed.

Amazing once that water gets behind that black undercoating crap how quickly things begin to rust

Re: 64 StepSide - Let's the games begin
Here's the driver's side- would love to get a new rear fender for this side without the spare tire relief. Mine is in good shape but but since I'm going to go with bigger tires I think it would look funny to have a midget tire hanging on the side of her.

Looking good! I have spent a three months on my bed and still not finished. Looks like you are coming along good from your pics. Did you cut your own wood? I am planning on doing mine myself. I have everything to do it, just need the confidence to make it happen.

Re: 64 StepSide - Let's the games begin
I have been looking at lowes but the only thing I found was oak and pine. I am still reasserting it. I heard birch maybe good? I am going to try another lumber yard and ask them. it is a smaller operation that deals in different woods. They should give me more advice.

Took the bed off tonight to start cleaning up the frame in preparation for the Porterbuilt Stage 2 I ordered last week.

Re: 64 StepSide - Let's the games begin
I cannot remember who, but someone here on the board used birch, and it did look good.
Another fellow used rough cut Douglas Fir, and that really looked good too !

Re: 64 StepSide - Let's the games begin
Been cleaning up the rear frame waiting for my porterbuilt parts to come in - my tank from Boyd's showed up yesterday - looks like that's going to work nicely - got the u-bolts out - the rear two cab mounts before I struck out on the front two cab bolts as they are just spinning - maybe tonight I can tackle that project. Still trying to decide whether to put down the por15 that I have on the frame or bite the bullet and powercoat - the frame is in incredible shape for the something that 50 years old - thinking someone must have done a frameoff in the 80's on this thing - it can't possibly be this clean.

Re: 64 StepSide - Let's the games begin
As u can see by my avatar. I cut my wood for my bed. I used pine from Home Depot. I spent about $80 in wood and cut them to size. I couldn't beat the price and it was easy. Check out my build to see a better picture.

Re: 64 StepSide - Let's the games begin
Picked up some wood for the bed - but apparently also picked up some ADD while I have been at it. Been ordering parts for the truck - expecting a new TKO 500 Tranny next week - still waiting on my orders from Porterbuilt - guess they are running behind. Did get the firewall cleaned up in the meantime - flipped her onto her back last night - and stripped the roof - have to finish up the gutters tonight and then get some etching primer down on that. Slowly gaining on err

Re: 64 StepSide - Let's the games begin
Haven't gotten that far - waiting on Porterbuilt rear kit to send the whole frame off to a powder coating - their cycles are supposedly really high right now - 10 weeks and counting - so as soon as I get those parts back I can get it off to the powder coater and start the resemble - I'm stripping the entire cab in the meantime - finished the top of the cab last night - and the back of the cab last weekend... the rest of the parts I figure I can throw on a trailer and drop somewhere to be media blasted.

Re: 64 StepSide - Let's the games begin
Yea I placed my order with porterbuilt about 2 weeks ago...I was told 6-8 weeks so I probably won't be able to get much done on my truck when I get back since the parts will be coming in shortly after I go back to afghanistan...

Re: 64 StepSide - Let's the games begin
I hope for your sake they come in before and you get a chance to play a bit before heading back. Be safe over there - and thank you for your service. Will be watching what you do with your stepside and stealing shamelessly anything cool

Re: 64 StepSide - Let's the games begin
I'm told I'm next in the queue at Porterbuilt - so hopefully by the end of the week the rear end pieces will be in the mail - but I did finish the roof stripped and primed over the weekend and I found 2 solid doors in PA (mine were full of bondo).
