what to do when offered a free truck

I was just offered a 75 k20 for free if i drug it out and pulled the motor trans and transfer. I have a 305/700r combo to stick in it or i could rob it of good parts (heavy duty years, etc) and scrap the rest. Apparently the body is rough but the rears are gm corperate. What Im asking is, would it be worth the time/ experience to make two complete trucks or just to upgrade my half ton? Any input to the younger generation of square lovers is appreciated lol.

Two being better than one is what i was thinking. Get the drivetrain together then let the rest of it come whenever i get extra cash.

Re: what to do when offered a free truck

I was giving a complete 77 3/4 4x4 from a dealer ship that took it on trade(did not run had a spun bearing) but did not have a title for it, I made alot of money off the truck parting it out.
Take it for sure if nothing else its worth the time just to haul it to the scrapper.

Take it. You can always scrap it if you don't want the hassle, though scrap prices are pretty low right now.

Make sure you have the means to dispose of what's left. Is there a facility close by that will buy the scrap from you? How will you get the scrap to the facility? What's the scrap facility's policy on taking cars/trucks?

I had a friend who ended up with a huge headache trying to get rid of a scrap car.

It should have flat top knuckles on the 44. They'll bring a benjamin by themselves...

I say build it! A 75 K20 isn't exactly an easy truck to find anymore. I say throw the 305 in for now and wait until you can afford to do something cool with it.

Never look the gift horse in the mouth! Take it, get the good parts off that you can use, scrap or sell the rest.

Re: what to do when offered a free truck

If given a truck, I will always take it. Then if I can help somebody out, I try to give the free truck or parts from it, to those who could use it.

I was given a 76 blazer many years ago. The body and frame were so rusty, that I could not do anything with them. It ran though (350, 4 speed, NP205) and I used it as a woods truck. I friend of a friend needed a motor for his daily driver in a hurry, so I let him take it a few years later.

I was also given 1989 NBS (at the time) half ton stepper (4.3L, 5 speed, 2wd) that needed a motor. I gave it to my father and he put a motor in it and ran it as a DD for a few years. We still have it and haven't decided what to do with it yet. Needs some work at this point and we are up to our ears in projects as it is.

Re: what to do when offered a free truck

A freind gave me an 85 Suburban with no motor or transmission. I robbed the power windows and locks, interior trim pieces, ac box, tilt column, bucket seats and console.
Then I called the junkyard and they gave me $300.00 and they picked it up too.
It did look absolutely hideous in my driveway though..lol

Re: what to do when offered a free truck

Do you have room for it and time? If so, pull the good stuff, scrap the shell and sell the rest. A guy from church called me a couple of years ago, and asked if I'd come out to his house to look at something. To my surprise we went out to his shop and there as a '65 Impala SS. It was complete but needed restoration. He said I seemed like a guy who would take care of it and do it justice. He loved the car but wasn't going to get to it. He said it was mine for nothing if I wanted it. The easy part was saying "No" because I simply didn't have the space, money or time for an extra project. The hard part was knowing that he may not see the car restored.

Re: what to do when offered a free truck

Well today i scrapped the Camaro that the motoand trans came out of so I'll probably go look at the truck this weekend. I guess the shape of the truck will determine whether i strip it or run it.
