where to get hardware
So, I bought a 69 short step and pretty much had to put it up for the winter. One day it was warm enough here in WI (29*) to really look at the truck, the PO has the whole bed messed up. I have nothing to compare it to except the LMC catalog. He's got carriage bolts holding on the fenders and 2 bolts holding the whole bed on. I think he welded angle iron on the sides, and front panel. There was no bed wood or strips and the tailgate doesn't fit.
I was thinking about ordering the whole bed attachment hardware and wear strips (not the wood though) from LMC, but is there a cheaper place with better shipping options? Attached is a picture, not a very good one, of the bed at first glance what else can you see that is missing? I am thinking of taking the whole bed apart and redoing it the right way. but having nothing to compare it to I will need some advice.

The hardware can be bought at any hardware store but I think a kit would be the most cost effective. Check all the usual places and compare cost including shipping. To name a few, Classic Heartbeat, GMC Paul's, Brothers, Mar-K, Classic Industries, LMC.

A quick look at your picture- it doesn't look that screwed up- the bed wood goes over the side strips and your cross members look to be all there- it's just a matter of buying the correct carriage bolts and cutting the bed wood correctly- check out GMCpauls web site for bed wood info.

my front piece near the back window is all rotted out i thought bout doing the angle iron thing but said ill just wait in find a new front piece i wonder why he welded it all up like that. i wish they had a steel floor for the stepsides i want one bad. i love the look of the wood but would hate to damage it like that

You are correct, the PO welded something onto the bed sides, that is not factory. The bed wood sits on top of the front bed panel at the front, and on the sides, the "angle iron" is supposed to sit on top of the wood (the factory piece). It looks like he took that into consideration and just planned to put wood on top of everything? It also appears he welded it to the braces as well.
It's not a huge help because I used treated deck boards, but you can see the factory angle pieces in my pic:

I purchased my bed wood and all hardware from Mar-K. Horkey in Windom, MN has quality material and is not that far from you. Good luck.

Looks like he did a fairly good job redesigning that bed, it should work ok putting the boards on top of the angle pieces unless you want it to look original. But you could buy the repro side angle strips and put them on top of the wood and it work be fine.
