NOS? GM Grill

I just picked up this 69/70 grille from a guy on craiglist it came with this box end. He tells me he got it in a trade the box got damaged from sitting in his back yard and he said it is NOS. Is there anyway to verify if its real GM Grille. I heard that some of the stuff from GM is a certified GM repro parts or is this a real GM part? The box has a GM part number 3985054.

Re: NOS? GM Grill

I would hazard a guess that is a genuine gm part, if so looks like you got a very valuable piece, Congrats

Re: NOS? GM Grill

It's definitely beautiful. One thing though, is the black painted edge between the headlights and the turn signals. From the factory, there were no black edges. The lines terminated into the headlight. Not sure if chevy stopped doing this with the grilles they made available for purchase, or if that means your grille is not NOS. I'm confusing myself lol

Re: NOS? GM Grill

You can't tell by the pic but this grille is super straight. I'm just trying to verify if it's a real GM grille It has no numbers on it that I can see Sure this has been asked before but how can you tell the difference between a aftermarket one and a real Nos GM repro?

Re: NOS? GM Grill

You might be able to figure out on the tag that is stuck to the end when it was shipped to the dealer. If it is the one that came in that box originally it is genuine GM and as it has never been installed it would somewhat fit the concept of new old stock. It may be that it was produced in the 70's or early 80's and that is the reason it didn't have the black stripe like one that had been sitting in a dealers attic since 1968.

I'm pretty sure that that sticker on the box end is the GM pull ticket that was printed out when the order hit the warehouse and the part was pulled and shipped.

I'm not sure why you are so worried unless you plan to flip it and make a bunch of money on it.

Re: NOS? GM Grill

Your grill looks like it could indeed be a GM service replacement part. Having the flap only proves the flap, but it seems to be the same as the later service parts. It is not the same as the production grill, as the stamped shape is different between the signal and the headlight openings. Additionally the amount of black infill and ends are also incorrect.

It might be better just to direct you to this thread for all the details and debate.

As usual, I agree with Tim. The original on my 69 was replaced in early 1972 with one like the one pictured in post #1. It was a GM grille as produced at that time. It appears you got the real deal, albeit a service replacement.

Its interesting that the box got ruined from sitting out side in the weather , yet the grill looks perfect?

I suppose I wouldn't be concerned either way, unless you paid a premium for it.

Re: NOS? GM Grill

what tim said - later year actual gm replacement part. Many still try to find the kind that have the horizontal lines that extend all the way to the headlight buckets, but if I had a 69/70, I'd have no problem stickin this on there. It's still gm, that's a big step above repro in my book.

Re: NOS? GM Grill

SO I did a little research and It looks like it came from Ray Korte Chevrolet in Scottsdale Az which has been closed since 2008. The date didn't tell me much I could see it says the month and day. But here is some pics of the labels on the box end. Is it true also that Nos Gm grilles have anodized type finish and aftermarket repro grilles are clearcoated.
