Hey, new here...would LOVE some help!!
Hey, so I am new to the forum (going to be making my first intro in a day or so as I get my engine swap time lapse video done) BUT I would really appreciate on some guidance right now.
In the engine swap, we were going to keep the headers from the engine we were putting in, but since they didnt fit on my manual we kept my stock manifold. In taking the stock manifold off and putting it on, one of these plugs got missing, so now there is a gaping hole. I have come to understand it is called a SMOG plug? But I have no idea how to get a hold of one (to tell you the truck the other ones are so rusted I would probably need a set of new 4 plugs/bolts. I have been to autozone, advanced, oreilys, and other places (even called the chevy dealership). Where could I find one of these TAPERED bolts. I thought it was just a regulard plug, but it has a taper on it so I cant fit anything else in (like its gets smaller towards the end). ANY information would be so SO helpful, because my truck has an exhaust leak right now that I would love to fix. |

I believe a regular pipe plug will thread right in there. Pickem up at any plumbing supply store.

You need a quarter inch pipe plug. They are available at lowe's, Home Depot, etc. An auto parts store will not carry them.

I got some plugs from autozone/ and window shopped at lowes but felt like I had already gotten the closest sized plug but when I threaded it in, it would only go about 1the in. I dont know if thats rust/something else buildup but yeah. And are brass plugs okay or??

You will need a pipe tap to clean up the threads.

If your manifolds are from a 78 up, the threads are specific to that size. They are different than a normal pipe plug. I know they were available only from a dealer and were very hard to get.
I would. as others said, use a pipe tap and tap a pipe plug size in the hole. The photo is the actual emission tube that would have threaded into the holes in your manifold |

Welcome to the board....after you get the plug fittings fixed, you will probably have another exhaust leak from a blown exhaust manifold gasket. Your mounting bolts will back out from heat to cool cycles. You could avoid this by getting the oem locking plates....also youll want to retorque the bolts after a couple start ups

Shouldn't those plugs be metric if it came from a 78?

I have a 71 c10 so im assuming it wouldnt be metric. Im going to look for that tool at lowes then. Would I need anything else? One of my buddies said that I should just get a smaller bolt and jb weld it. And I just replaced the gaskets in the swap, would I need to again?

If you have one out or can get one out you can have autozone or whomever see if it is a pipe thd or NPT(natioal pipe thread) and they could tell you if it is metric. like Gene said you will need a pipe tap to clean out the threads They refer to the threads as NPT so ask for that kind of tap Good luck and Nice ride

No, the gaskets are fine, but if you dont fix the mounting bolts, the exhaust manifold will loosen up, causing an exhaust leak

In regards to the pipe tap, what size should I get, and how do i figure it out? Do I remove one of the exhaust plugs and get it sized?
Which would be better? Doing the pipe tap thing so it secures the plugs that I can buy or order some? I am not really sure about sizes though. If I buy the tap (which looks like a drill tip) do I need an additional tool? [AND THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL THE HELP] |

to use a tap you generally need a drillbit of a specific size marked on the side of the tap. The tap obviously needs to be bigger than the hole you already have.
drill out the hole (very straight). then use the tap attached to the tap tool to spin it. the tap DOESNT go in a drill. All that said. I would just buy the new plugs that fit it. Or actually if its not a show car I would just buy whatever will fit and crank that beatch down!! but thats just me. |

ALSO! Do I need to remove the manifold to do this, or can i just get a pipe tap and use a hand tool on it while its still attached to the truck? like then just plug it up with a plug

you can probably do it on the truck but im not sure if your drill will fit to predrill the hole before tapping.
also you need to drill very straight obviously and that might be hard standing on your head under the hood. |

If it were me, I would just order new ones and not have to mess with tap or try to find some at a junkyard.

Yeah, I think I am going to order some of the new ones, but I still am worried, because when I look at the picture in this link.
