Gas smell - found problem, what's the solution?

So I went to my truck today to get something out and it smelled like someone poured gas all inside the truck. I moved the seat as far forward as I could and I pulled the carpet up and found that the center of the tank is wet all under the sending unit. Here is my question, is the top cap connected directly to the sending unit? The reason I ask is because it looks like the hard line on top of the tank may be cracked around its base. Does that require replacement of the entire sending unit and if so can it be done with the seat in the truck? Where would be the best place to pick up the part I need?

Line coming out is part of the sending unit. You'll have to remove the sending unit and either replace it if it looks like it's old defective or maybe find some way to braze the line.

Forgot to add: You can remove the sending unit with the seat pushed as far farward as you can get it. You will have to do a search on this site for more info but be sure and use a brass drift to tap around it to remove it. Be extremely careful of sparks with metallic parts and disconnect the battery just to be safe.

It is very simple to remove the sending unit. As gmsee said just tap the retainer ring. Remove the unit to inspect whats exactly leaking.

Thanks for the info. Sounds pretty simple. Any idea where the best place is to get the parts? I found it in LMCs catalog but I know they don't always have the best parts.

what seat do you have? The bench really isn't that hard to pull out anyway and it would give you a lot more room to work. Not necessary, but if you have a newly reupholstered seat or some such it would be worth it IMO in case of leaks.

one more thing , make sure your tank is low enough on gas to pull the sender out. about a half tank or lower...or you will have a big leak....

Thanks for the heads up. I actually figured that the smell is so strong because I just put gas in it the last time I drove it. I'll have to put some miles on her ( boo hoo ) before I swap it out. That will give me time to order the parts I need.

OR you could just syphon some off in to my tank.
