6 lug front drums - worth saving anything?

I'm tearing apart the '68 front suspension tonight to make room for 5 lug disc brakes. I'm cringing a bit as parts go in the recycle bin. I'll save the control arms but the 6 lug spindles and brakes...? eh... standard steering box also in the bin. I only have a 2 car garage and the wife has so far been tolerant so I can't hold on to much of it. Center link maybe?

What year spindles are you using?
63-70 conversion spindles will allow you to keep the original centerlink and tie rods.

I have a 1971/2 setup with new everything on it. Haven't decided yet if I just swap ball joints or the whole cross member.

Hello Stomper,
If you don't keep anything I recommend you resell these parts, because they are hard to come by for our old trucks. They don't even remanufacture the drums with the lugs no more, so you have to go find someone that has them. Good luck to you what ever you decide.

I would always try to sell good used parts rather than scrap them. Ebay or craigslist.

Holy Crap! Oriley's core charge on a manual steering box is almost $250.

Re: 6 lug front drums - worth saving anything?

Hello Stomper,
ORIELLY is charging 250 on core charge, that is insain! I still call them O'Kragens because they are still high priced. The local Auto Zone here normally charges about 20 to 50 dollars depending on what kind of part it is. If I was faced with this, I would consider finding one cheap just to get out of the core charge. I finally decided to rebuild my last one and reinstalled it. I enjoyed that and it was easy. You Tube has instructional vidio on this as well. Good luck on the truck and box.
