Speaker options for original AM radio?

I installed an original AM radio. I just got a replacement antenna, so I wired everything up. The radio is getting power, because the light to the display comes on when I turn the radio on. Unfortunately, there's no sound. I would suspect the original speaker is shot.

The problem now, is that I checked Brothers and LMC, but the speakers they sell for that spot are stereo. Can I even wire those up to this radio? If so, how?

Any other options? I want to keep this radio and stock type setup. I don't want a different unit, additional unit, speakers mounted in a non original spot, etc.

Re: Speaker options for original AM radio?

Mr-B. I had the same problem. I sent my factory speaker off to get re-coned. After install, and 80 bucks later, it still didn't sound all that great. I ended up buying one from turnswitch.com. I think the quality and sound is great. You will need the 10 ohm mono speaker in the 4x10. If you give them a call, they can fix you up for about 50 bucks. Lmc and others just sell the 4 ohm which can possibly burn up our factory radios.

Thanks so much. That's great info. Were you able to just mount it up with the original mounting hardware in the original spot?

I bought the one from turnswitch as well. Sounds great and bolts right up to stock brackets. You can't go wrong with their speaker. Here is a pic of the speaker I bought from them

Re: Speaker options for original AM radio?

Yes sir, the factory speaker bracket fit turnswitches aftermarket one just like like the original. I didn't modify anything.

They must have changed their name in the last few years - they went under "Electro-Tech" when I dealt with them. In any event, they do it right.

Re: Speaker options for original AM radio?

A side note if you want to / have to use modern 4 ohm speakers: Wire two 4 ohm speakers in series to see an 8 ohm load at the radio. It isn't the 10 ohm that the stock speaker is, but much better than a 4 ohm load for it.

Re: Speaker options for original AM radio?

I just bought the 4 X 10 replacement from Electro-Tech in November. It fit perfect and sounds great. $59.45 shipped to my door.
