Is this a good deal?

I found a 5.3 with 35,XXX; a rebuilt 4L60E by a guy that owns his own transmission shop; complete wiring harness, ecu, gas pedal (drive by wire) for 2500.00. Seems like a good deal to me for a complete package but wanted to check before I hand over that much money at once.

Re: Is this a good deal?

I would never pay that much for a 5.3/4L60E combo.

Something like that goes for around $1500 in my neck of the woods.

Re: Is this a good deal?

I think it's high also. The rebuilt tranny would be around $800 here, the 5.3 would be in the 5-700 range. Can he verify that mileage? I would offer maybe $1700 if the mileage is verified, he shows receipts the trans is rebuilt AND all accessories/harness/DBw stuff is there.

Good luck!

Re: Is this a good deal?

I'm actually in the market for a 5.3/6.0 also and that seems high around me as well. Check car-part.com. They have a database of junkyard listings. I found an LM7 5.3 near me for only $600.

I used to deal with a local place who list stuff on car-part.com, until recently when they added a $200 core charge to all of their LS takeouts. WTF is that all about. Just be aware of that possibility if you're dealing with some of these places because their quoted price might not include the $200.

Re: Is this a good deal?

Wow, no idea about that one. Thanks for the heads up. Might just be a local yard thing, but I'll be sure to check that out before I buy. $200 could be the difference between two completely different engines in my case.

Yes, the $200 is for this specific yard only (that I know of...I'm sure some others do it also).

My point is, that when they list stuff on Car-part, it doesn't include their core charge.

Re: Is this a good deal?

Ha, speaking of "good deals"....

My brother just called me from Texas. He found a few 2003 2500HDs sitting out back of a shop...half torn apart. Was able to score THREE complete Lq4s, a 4L80E, and a 2500HD transfer case....for $1000.

The deals are out there if you keep looking.

The year before that I got an LQ4 from them for $750.

See my comment above...those prices would be $200 more now.

Slightly unrelated but Gas Monkey Garage is headed to Peoria to check out a car. Keep your eyes open for me.

Re: Is this a good deal?

Sounds very high to me as well. I picked up the same amount of stuff but it was LQ4/ 4L80E combo. $1750 for it all. There are 5.3 everywhere. Just be patient and you'll find them for the right price..

Re: Is this a good deal?

Here's my take: when I was checking around here in California 2500 was the going rate for a complete pullout 5.3 with tranny and accessories with 70k miles. Alot of guys are able to find great deals, but I was not able to find those great deals myself. If you trust the guy and have a god feeling, it's a good deal to me. Will he warranty the tranny? That's not that bad in my opinion. Everything around here that was cheap in the 1500.00 range was either high miles, incomplete, or had a sketchy history. JMHO.

Would ALL of those pieces have to come from the same donor vehicle, and work as a whole in your project?

Re: Is this a good deal?

I have about $1300 in my 5.3/4l60e and that was buying everything separate on craigslist. My motor had 38k and the trans was rebuilt 0 miles. Just keep looking for a good deal they're out there.

Re: Is this a good deal?

$2500 is high by just about any standard. $1500 is the going rate I have seen in SC, GA, FL, AL and NC. People don't always know what a fair price is, so they charge what they feel you will pay. You can make an educated purchase or just pay the price if your are comfortable with it. Clearly you are not comfortable or you would not have posted here.
