Question going from 350 to 700r4.

If I go buy an overdrive steering column out of a C10 (year unknown) and put it in my 85 C10 origianlly a 3 speed auto truck, then what are the wiring differences if any. Is everything plug n play? My truck now is a TH350C that has lockup convertor. The 700 will have a lockup as well. I am thinking the 700 column is an 85 as well. All I know at this time is that it was a MXO code trans. I am going this week to strip the interior and would like to take the column if it is a direct swap.

Re: Question going from 350 to 700r4.

When we cahnged out my 84 GMC truck and my son's 86 Chevy truck from 350C trannys to the OD trannys, we did NOT change out the columns. The detents are actually inside the tranny and all we had to do was to put in a new indicator on the instrument panel and adjust the shift rod sliding setnut to a point where the shifter indication was the same as the indicator. Life goes on and you do NOT have to buy a new column

Thanks! I never thought of it like that.

Re: Question going from 350 to 700r4.

I was just getting ready to do this myself. I had read on here people talking about swapping columns because of the detents, but it didnt make sense to me. I have had to use a Lokar direct shift linkage kit in some cases but I think the firewall on these trucks cuts it close to the output of the column. I never understood why there is so much crazy linkage and a bellcrank to hook up

Re: Question going from 350 to 700r4.

My son and I later changed out the column shifters for B&M Truck Mega shifters, so that there would be a positive lock out for the reverse gear. I have now changed out my column for a manual tranny column, so that there would not be a connection point hanging out there.
