Picked up a 1975 C-30 today

Last week I bought a 1975 C-30 Scottsdale and we picked it up today. It starts, runs and drives.

I have only been able to look it over a little. It came with a 454 with an automatic originally but now has a '73 350 with a SM-465 in it. The previous owner did the conversion. The 350 is supposed to have been rebuilt before put into the truck.

So the journey begins with this group of trucks. I plan to fix it up and drive it.

The people on the 67-72 side of the board like pictures so I figured you all would too.

Here are a few pictures.

Re: Picked up a 1975 C-30 today

I was not looking for one when I found this one. A friend of ours has had it for 7 years using it to haul hay for her horses. She hasn't used it for a few years now and decided to sell it and mentioned it too my wife who told me. I could not pass the truck up for the price she wanted, $1000.

I love it! Standard cab duallies are my favorites.

Looks good. Does it have gas caps or fuel doors? Looking at the pictures on my phone it appears it has fuel doors, which would indicate a later box.

Re: Picked up a 1975 C-30 today

It does have two gas tanks with fuel doors. What year did these trucks start having fuel doors?

The person I bought the truck from knew very little about the truck, her father gave it to her in 1996 and she rarely ever drove it. He is not around so I was not able to talk to him.

I know it had a different engine, 1973 350 by the numbers, and transmission put in it prior to 1996 and was painted.

It is interesting trying to figure out what has been done to these old trucks over the years by previous owners. This truck looks to be mostly complete with very little rust compared to others its age.

The bed is a replacement. Fuel doors started in the late 70's... 78 I think. Not a minus IMHO.

I believe the fuel doors began in '78. It's not a plus or a minus. Personally, I like the caps out the sides. The front clips are the same from 1973-80.

Re: Picked up a 1975 C-30 today

Well, I was working on the truck today to get it into better shape and found out some bad and also confusing things about the truck.

The engine was supposed to have less than 200 miles on it. The oil pressure is kind of low and at an idle the engine makes quite a bit of noise.

I looked at the transmission, I thought it was a SM-465, but the one bolted to the back of the engine is not a SM-420 or 465. I am not sure what it is, I guess I will have to see if I can get some numbers off of it. The transmission is quite a bit longer than a SM-465 and has a mount at the back end of the transmission right before the output yoke.

Re: Picked up a 1975 C-30 today

I thought the shift lever on the transmission was shaped different than a SM-420 or SM-465 I have ever seen. It does have the same shift pattern as the SM-465.

I found this picture and it shows a New Process 435 that has the same shift lever as is on the transmission in my truck, so I thinking that is what I have.

The more I work on the truck the more mysteries I find, that is part of the fun of working on these old trucks.

Re: Picked up a 1975 C-30 today

I just found a picture of when we were towing the '75 home with the '92 GMC. We towed the '75 home even though it ran because it had not been out on the road since before 1996.
