I have a 72 350 with what I think is the original distributor. I got the stuff(cap, rotor, points, wires and Bosch Platnums) last fall to do a tune-up for it but didn't start on it until a few weeks ago. I took the points out and ran out of time so I decided to finish it later. During the week or so that went by, I somehow lost the old points.....no big deal. I got the new ones and put them in. They don't work. They fit too tight to adjust. Once they are put into place they can't be moved to adjust. I went back to NAPA to get another set, not telling them that I got a set from them that didn't fit. I get home and open the box and these look nothing like the ones that I got fro them last fall....no condenser. I still can't find the original points that I took out of the truck and don't remember exactly what they look like but I do believe they are supposed to have a condenser......right?

Was there more than one set up for points on these motors?

I have decided not to mess with it anymore. I'm gunna order an HEI set-up from Summit in the morning. Any suggestions on what to buy. I don't want to mess with one from a bone yard. I wanna new one.

A stock HEI is fine, an advance kit and hotter coil is good if you need them on your engine, but wasted $$ otherwise.
Good move on tossin the points crap. I never mess with them on my own vehicles. Thaey are the first thing to get tossed.

I compared the two. The one from Summit has 48,000 volts and costs right around $150. The one from Accel doesn't list the volts on it but I looked at the same one from Summit and they recommend that you buy the Accel coil and it's only 45,000 volts. Maybe I shouldn't assume, but, I would assume that the coil that comes with the Accel distributor is less than 45,000.....? The price of the Accel coil and distributor will cost me more and give me fewer volts......right?
I just want to make sure that I get the best for the truck......within a reasonable price.
Has anyone had any experience with these that can give an opinion?

I dont have any experience with either (i have a used HEI on my truck...works great), but i think the Summit model is made by Proform. I have heard several bad things on this board, and on Chevytalk, that the Proform HEI isn't made very well at all. The Accell model might be a little better quality, but im not sure. The stock HEI coil is great up to 4000 or so RPMs, so if you have a mostly stock motor, there is really no point in getting a high voltage coil. But if you go ahead and hop it up a little bit, you may appreciate the extra volts.
