If you want the transfercase(4hi or 4lo) to drive the front wheels you'lll need to lock the hubs. Putting the transfercase in 2 hi and un-locking the front hubs (free) saves on gas and wear and tear on the front tires and front end components.

Yes, you need to lock the hubs. The locking hubs connect the axles to the wheels. If you put the truck in 4hi or 4lo and the hubs are not locked in, the front driveshaft and axles will turn but no power will get to the wheels.

It's in 4 wheel drive if your front hubs are locked and your transfer case is in 4-high or 4-low.

To summarize what Heavy said, the transfer case drives the front differential and the axles -- the hubs lock the axles and the wheels together.

It's common practice to lock the hubs when the weather gets bad, and then just set the transfer case in 2 or 4 wheel drive as needed.

if the truck in question is in fact a 1980 chev.....most 1980s have the 205 transfer case....if so then you wont wanna drive on pavement with the case in 4wd.....unless its covered with snow...

Thanks for the info! Is there an order for putting it in 4wd? Like hubs 1st the transfercase, or transfercase then hubs?
