rally wheels - someone please explain this !

okay so i have come to find that there are 7.5'' wide rally wheels as well as 8'' and 9''. whats the deal here ! why so many different sizes? did it have to do with the year of the truck or were the 7.5''s for vans, 8'' for trucks and 9'' for jimmys and burbs? im confused here! im planning on putting 2 of the wide ones in the back and 2 of the 8''s in the front. someone clear this up as i have only one 9'' wheel and need to find a mate for it !

You're measuring the width incorrectly. The width of a wheel is measured from the inside of the wheel lip. From inner lip to lip.

you're measuring over all width . wheels are typicaly measured where the tires mount. typicaly, vans had 6.5" , early truck two wheel drives in the 70's had 7" and later trucks and surburbans thru the 80's and all 6 lug were 8"

I will add to this a little . 5 lug wheels were offered in 6.5, 7 , and 8 inch widths. The 6 lug wheels were offered in 7 and 8 inch widths. The rarest truck Rally is probably the 6 lug 15x7 .
