Dome Light Problem

My dome light inside the cab randomly came on and won't turn off. I disconnected the battery and when I reconnected it the dome light was still on. Any advice would be appreciated! My truck is a '86 if that matters.

Re: Dome Light Problem

could be many things... may be the door switches.

not sure of your skill level so maybe the best thing to do is get familiar with the wiring diagrams of your truck? particularly with the inside of the cab...

you can go here:
http://www.2heeldrive.com/Chevrolet/...ng_Diagrams%2F

if your's is an 86 it is probably in 81up Chevy directory

http://www.2heeldrive.com/Chevrolet/...F81up+Chevy%2F

some of these are huge files, so it would be best to download them to your computer then open them up for easier viewing.

Not sure but maybe you could start with the file of the complete wiring manual 1986_GM_CK_Light_Truck_Wiring_Manual_S.pdf

http://www.2heeldrive.com/Chevrolet/...g_Manual_S.pdf

that's my suggestion, there will be others who will help

good luck

Re: Dome Light Problem

Hi
done any other recent electrical work?
check and pull your door pins
white wire from doors to ground makes it come on
it runs across under the lip of the glove box
there are metal clips holding it
check it for nicks/ cuts

Re: Dome Light Problem

I would check, adjust and clean the door striker switches. Remember + (hot) runs continuously to them . The striker makes the ground when the door is open. Once cleaned up try screwing them out a turn.

Thanks for the help fella's! I have not done any electrical work at all recently. I'm not too familiar with electrical work, but I have a few friends that can help me troubleshoot with your suggestions. I'll check back soon!

PDFs of the GM squarebody wiring and service manuals are in my signature.
The dome and courtesy lights have a hot direct to the fuse panel all the time. The door and headlight switch ground the other side of the bulb to the cab.

This is a fair representation of a GM dome light circuit.

Re: Dome Light Problem

Carefully remove each door switch. You have to hold on to the center pin with small vice grips or pliers and turn the nut out. If you don't use this method you will just twist the switch around in the hole. Gently pull the switch out of the door pillar and see if the wires are OK (not frayed, still intact in the switch). You can put an alligator clip on the switch and to the hole in the door pillar and operate the plunger. If you get intermittent operation, replace the switch - available cheap at any parts store. My driver's door switch will not come on periodically, then work properly on occasion - fiddle with the door switch and it works properly.
