I give up. What should I do for pulleys and brackets??
I recently went back to a small block, maybe temporary, in my 70. I need to get mounts and pulleys on it to run PS and AC.
Right now I have an 8" balancer and short water pump, I think. The WP is about 5.8" from the flanges on the block. What would be the best way to make it look stock and function please?

Get on pick and pulls website. They have a finder feature. Look up a truck with a sbc. Go pull the brackets, clean em up. Paint em. Run em!

Re: I give up. What should I do for pulleys and brackets??
thanks I did think of that but only places I find them at are 50 miles away from me. I am looking for more of a should I use a long water pump and associated brackets and pulleys or change balancer, and use short?? Which would be better kind of thing.

Re: I give up. What should I do for pulleys and brackets??
I tell owners who are doing this to find an untouched completely stock engine and take all the parts in front of the engine from it. All mounting brackets, p.s. pump. all pulleys, h. balancer if possible and pulleys off the balancer, alternator pulley fan pulley and even the belts.
There are so many different variations that unless you are really lucky, you can literally spend lots of time (and gas money) trying to get them properly lined up. I searched high an low for a complete, untouched engine that I could take the parts from at the local yards and couldn't find one. I even advertised on craigslist in case someone had one in the backyard that was untouched.

Re: I give up. What should I do for pulleys and brackets??
The 8 inch balancer is the same regardless of short or long water pump. The crank pulley you need will have two pieces for A/C. The power steering brackets, I believe are the same long or short. Someone correct me on that if I am wrong. The alternator will mount on the driver side for a short pump.
It is true that long water pump brackets and pulleys are more available. I will have all the long stuff available soon as I am changing mine all to short. I bought all my short stuff from board members here. It is available, you just need to be patient and wait for the right person to post. Put up a WTB thread and you will be suprised how fast you get what you want. Good prices also. |

Re: I give up. What should I do for pulleys and brackets??
okay you guys talked me into staying with the Short Pump. I thought I had read that the Short Pump interfered with the 8 inch balancer. I have the 8 inch and a short pump on there now and man it is close. I think the main thing that confuses me is I see brackets and pulleys for either Short Pump or long pump but none that will fit both. I'll search the for sale forum and see what I can find. and as far as patience, thank you that's the best advice yet.

not 100% but I think 8" balancer and PS bracket might be close... if not a problem?

Re: I give up. What should I do for pulleys and brackets??
It probably depends on which PS brackets I get. I may have to introduce them to Mr Grinder to just clean up edges before I paint. Thanks Scott
