1959 gmc 450
Hey guys new to the forum but not to trucks about a month ago I picked up a 1959 GMC 450 truck with a 16' dump bed in it if anyone has any spec sheets or information about these trucks that would be greatly appreciated and also the owners father did a complete engine overhaul a couple years back but he passed and the owner didn't know what size engine it is I'm thinking a 292 inline 6 is what's in it but if anyone knowledgeable about these could chime in that would be great

Re: 1959 gmc 450
Got any pictures?.....We like pictures here. The engine if original would most likely be a gmc 270.

Re: 1959 gmc 450
I love it! Nice truck, man. I think a 270 or 302 GMC is what would have came in it originally.

Re: 1959 gmc 450
So how exactly do I go about finding what engine is in it, I want to ditch the oil bath filter and do a decent conical filter with intake tube for a bit more air flow then an hei distributor and since its been converted to 12v some led lights

Check the first three numbers on the flat area next to the dissy, probably a 302. Chris

Re: 1959 gmc 450
That is a real workhorse you have. Around here a truck like that would probably have hauled grain to the silo or sweet corn to the cannery.

Re: 1959 gmc 450
The numbers you are after are stamped on the flat boss next to the distributer. The first three numbers tell the displacment of the engine. Chris

Re: 1959 gmc 450
There should be a metal tag attached to the inside of the glovebox door. If it's still there It'll tell you the GVW, trans, rear end, and so on. Chris

I defiantly like the body style of this truck better than the 47 Chevy 1.5ton I had

Re: 1959 gmc 450
Its not a 292 (or a 250 or 230 for that matter), Valve cover and intake give it away.Definitely a GMC ingine . Very nice truck . We dont find the larger trucks that nice around here. They usually get run to death- then cut up and scrapped.

Re: 1959 gmc 450
Nice truck but may not be original engine, B207 is Feburary 20 1957 casting date on the block. It is possible that GM had engines laying around for a year or so but usually the block date is just a month of so earlier than the assembly date. I know my chevelle was purchased in late august and most of the dated parts are from June and July of the same year.
