When myth busters debunked all the license plate mods to fool traffic light camera they didn't think to test w/ tailgate down.

I would argue that the speed you have to be moving for aerodynamics to have a strong influence, would dictate the air is in fact coming directly head-on. Unless you are talking about driving in windy conditions, but that isn't really a good comparison.
