Question Posi or limitedslip?

Has anyone out there( Iknow someone has) taken a rear end with limited slip or posi out of later model trucks and put in their 67-72? I currently have a one wheel burnout monster of a truck, but want more traction. I am sure there has to be some modifications for that to be done. WHat other options are there out there? Can I replace the insides of my rear axle to accompolish this?

Had same problem. Got a Eaton Posi unit from Reider Racing. (other places carry it also). All you have to do is take your ring gear off your present carrier and install it on the new Eaton carrier and reinstall in rear end. I didn't have to adjust anything. Piece of cake. Now I can lay down 2 lines of rubber.

Check out www.markwilliams.com. Under their specials section they have eaton posi for $310. That's a deal if you can afford a new one. You can usually pick up new gears for another $150 and bearing kit for another $100.

So how many different parts will I need to switch out my current setup?

I know I need the eaton posi unit.

What are the gears and the bearing kit?


jhow66 says use existing gears and Injected68LS1 says to get new ones.

I paid $25 extra for new bearings and races. I reused my 3:73 gears.

I checked that link, pretty good selection of gears for the 12 bolt, any one running the 3.91 to 1 gears they offer? Looks like it might be a good comprimise between 3.73 and 4.11

What gear ration should I use for my truck?

402 BB
Turbo 400 tranny.

I think it currently has 3.07, but I am not for sure.

Well, where do you drive it...
I mean, do you use the truck for just cruizing around town, interstate driving, hauling/pulling?

A 3.07 would be great if you drive the truck long distances, it will help your mpg.
If you stay in town or tow, I would choose a 3.73, or even a 4.10 for more grunt

I have 2 12 bolt 3.73 rear ends 1 wheel peel, would it be best to put the eaton posi unit in rather than buying a complete rear end ??

72superBB I had the same setup as yours ( 402-400turbo-3.07 gear). If it is your daily driver the 3.07 will be fine. Just add new carrier bearings like the other guys say. That plus a gasket and Posi fluid will be all you need.
