What hubcap for my rims?

Gentlemen, and Dan.

Sorry couldn't resist giving you some $hit, you never miss a post!

What hubcaps fit my rims? I am not sure what year these rims are from but there are no rivet on clips. Thanks!!

Are there several different types for this style rim? I am wondering if they look like these?

Re: What hubcap for my rims?

Ok, YOU can!

But seriously, it's a little hard to tell from your picture but I THINK your rims have the "bumps" on them to hold the hubcaps, right? Even if you could put the spring hubcap retainers on them and the caps would fit, the bumps showing would look odd, wouldn't they? And I THINK the ones that fit on those bumps ARE kinda big (and ugly to me, no offense). The '64-'66 ones HERE:
http://www.truckandcarshop.com/trucks60_72/t60_150.html

But the very fact that the '57-'59 caps are pictured in the '60-'66 catalog makes me wonder if they'd fit OVER the bumps? I've always liked those.

I LOVE steelies with beauty rings and small caps to the point that I plan to get a 2nd set of rims like that at some point as an occasional change of pace look!

Re: What hubcap for my rims?

The wheel has a safety bead lock so it most likely is '67 & up. There may even be a date code stamped in the rim.

Re: What hubcap for my rims?

Those are later wheels. The original wheels use an "inside clip" which can be bought separately and installed with rivets but as Dan recognized, you'll still have "ugly" because those nubs will be hanging out.

I have similar wheels on my truck. I've spent more $$ on cheap (and not so cheap) baby moon caps over the years than I want to add up but they only last a couple of years before they rust. A neighborhood dog sprayed the last ones while the truck was parked outside and they rusted before a week had passed. I'd decided I'd had enough and dedicated a few days to looking for stainless covers. I finally found a set made by Phoenix. They're marketed for trailers but they fit my truck wheels perfectly. You can see pictures of the trailer baby moons here: http://www.nueratrailerparts.com/c-2...ps-covers.aspx Once I found the correct hubcaps I ordered them directly from Phoenix: http://www.phoenixusa.com/

What was really tricky was that the published ID for the cap didn't match the size of other caps that I'd bought. IIRC I bought the 1307SS for my 16" wheels. I can probably dig out the receipt if necessary.

My stainless trim rings are from 88-96 Chevrolet trucks. I was working in a dealership when I was restoring the '57 and I'd tried a ring from a used truck on the lot so I knew it would fit my wheels. A customer's new truck had arrived and as I was prepping it for delivery he said "Don't bother putting the trim rings on. I'm buying aluminum wheels." So I got a smoking deal on four brand new GM trim rings.

Re: What hubcap for my rims?

what is the diameter of the place the cap goes? If it is a 16 wheel for later disc brake (68+) application these will fit. The upper photos are for 68-72 K5/10 applications with 10.25" back diameter (10.5 front). K20/30 applications look similar but are 1" larger diameter. The originally came in paint, stainless and chrome.
The lower are for 72-78 K5/K10 and are cheaper and lighter material. I got a set of the upper ones for mine. The came with and without beauty rings, I have a set of those too.

Just an errant thought:

I WONDER (since the later rims w/the "nubs" are common) if you could grind off those nubs - yes, it would leave an oblong hole - and weld in a patch from a damaged rim/grind smooth? Then install the "inside clips".

I don't think this would be a structural concern as the hole wouldn't be on the rim portion and if you welded in the patch before grinding off the next nub, there'd be little chance of heat deforming the rim. (I honestly think the rims are too thick to have to worry about that too much anyway)

Thoughts?

Re: What hubcap for my rims?

That's a fair amount of work. Clean and weld the inside / back side of the nub first, then cut and grind the unwanted portion off.

Re: What hubcap for my rims?

If they are fifteens I think a lot of the so called "poverty caps/cop car caps" will fit and you may not have to stay with truck caps unless you want to. Sometime along in the 70's or 80's they had small caps with a bow tie in the middle that would look great on an older truck.

Maybe a nice set that were similar to this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Chev...00b78d&vxp=mtr

Or 56 car caps http://www.ebay.com/itm/56-Chevy-210...ab4a49&vxp=mtr

Those are just examples to get the brain cells charged up and not a suggestion to buy those particular ones. I'd find an old one locally and try it before spending any money on a set though.

Re: What hubcap for my rims?

I am running 53 car full caps on mine, they need a lot of massaging but still look pretty good. I am running 86 C10 rims so they are very similar to yours with the nubs.
Just a thought.

Don't want to hyjack this thread but....Dan... the reason the 57-59 caps are in the 60-66 catalog is because they were also used on 1960 model year trucks and still used the same wheel as the 1950's trucks in 1960
