5.3/4l60e swap into a 64. Lots of questions

I've been looking on here at multiple threads on lsx swaps. There is so much different info and products that are available I have no clue where to even start. I just want to do a simple install. No crazy custom stuff, or anything like that. I just want to know the easiest and cheapest way to get the job done. Anyone have a parts list of exactly what Ill need so I can start ordering stuff?

Oh, and I bought a complete 2003 tahoe. So I have more to work with that just the engine and trans.

Re: 5.3/4l60e swap into a 64. Lots of questions

Looks like I'll need a Walbro 255 GSL395 external fuel pump, a WIX 33737 fuel filter, and some fittings and line to get it all hooked up. Looks like I can use all 3/8 an-6 line and threaded fittings. My next thing is motor mounts. Ebay had the adapter plates that will convert sbc style to ls. Is that what I need? Being as I have a complete running vehicle I wont need a bunch of various wiring harneses, or computers or reflashes will I?

Re: 5.3/4l60e swap into a 64. Lots of questions

Really depends on what you are familiar and unfamiliar with. You have tons of room in there, so finding motor mounts that will work shouldn't be an issue. The pan should clear the lower cross member without issue.

You'll probably have to move the tranny cross member a little bit, but again that isn't a big deal. Plan on having your driveshaft shortened I think.

I found the biggest task with these types of swaps is the wiring and programming. Your best/cheapest option is going to be to use the factory ECM, as it controls both the engine and transmission. If you go with an aftermarket computer setup you'll need to get one for the transmission as well. Companies make them, but they can be spendy.

Using the stock ECU you'll need to get someone to tune it, or tune it yourself with HP Tuners. You'll probably have to have them turn off stuff like the Vehicle Anti-theft Sensor.

There can be a lot to it, but don't let it feel too daunting. I haven't done this particular swap, but have done a similar one. Let everyone know what you are and aren't comfortable with, and I'm sure people can fill in the gaps.

A website/forum called LS1Tech has a whole section dedicated to swaps like this. Would be a good supplemental resource in addition to these forums.

Re: 5.3/4l60e swap into a 64. Lots of questions

I feel remotely comfortable about tackling anything. I honestly don't know the slightest about what all parts I will need tho.As far as getting the motor set in and everything mounted, That wont be an issue. Ill buy motor mounts that will bolt on, and I already have an aftermarket bolt it trans crossmember so that won't be a big deal either. I'm mainly just concerned with getting the fuel system hooked up, and the wiring figured out. I wish I could find a step by step of exactly what I need to do.

Re: 5.3/4l60e swap into a 64. Lots of questions

Hey Jared, Hi from about 120 miles straight north.

I have the same plan, kinda under way. My donor is a 98 T/A.

Simplest MM. Use 73-87 SBC truck perches/towers, clamshells and motor mounts + the adapter plate from Dirty Dingo, e-bay, or the site's diagram (see under Engine>LS>Motor mounts).

Simplest fuel system. Use the Tahoe set up. Its made for that engine.

The biggest issue, and I think why you and the rest of us are overwhelmed, is the combination of motor perch, motor mount, transmission choice/mount and the exhaust system. Only certain combinations work and others have spent a lot of trial and error money to find out.

I plan on using as much from the T/A as I can, fuel system, electrical, engine but probably not the tranny. I'm debating on which manual tranny to use.

There is also a LS truck swap site also. Somewhere. Here.

There is another site on the LS/LT wiring. I'LL find it sometime. In the meantime, check this out for LS wiring information.

Dave.

There was a two part series in Classic Trucks magazine that premired in the March issue of this year where they put one in a panel.

Re: 5.3/4l60e swap into a 64. Lots of questions

Ok, Jared. first thing first.

Do you want to tackle the harness or do you want someone else to tackle it? send it out now if you want it completed by someone else.

The ECM can be reprogramed locally most of the time, look for a local tuner so if you have problems, you can run down the street and ring his neck.

Will you EVER want to lower your truck? Is it all ready lowered? IF yes to either, get the GMPP oil pan now and put it on when you remove the ls from the donor.

I suggest the Dirty Dingo mounts because they will allow you some back-forward room. I think Capt'n Fab makes some too!

The motor and trans will slide in there just fine, you shouldnt have any issue except!

The exhaust manifolds, go get you some TBSS manifolds, they are cheap and will flow fine for your needs.

Once you have those items and processes in motion, you are good to start.

Remember, when you have the old motor out, that is the best time to clean and paint the firewall and replace misc stuff. I did that and I am SOOOOO glad I did.

Good luck!

Re: 5.3/4l60e swap into a 64. Lots of questions

Does the stock oil pan really set that low? My truck is lowered maybe 2" up front. I honestly wouldnt mind it being stock ride height is need be. TBSS?? Im guessing Trail Blazer ss? Are the tahoe manifolds gonna be way off, or is it possible to do a little modifying to make them work?

My guess is it was more of a recommendation for good flow than fitment issues.

Re: 5.3/4l60e swap into a 64. Lots of questions

Jared,

Tahoe/truck manifolds wont fit right, you will have to do some frame adjustment and manifold adjustment. The TBSS Mani's will fit right in and also flow a bunch better than the stock trucks. Also Hooker sells some headers\Mani's that will also bolt right in.

My truck is dropped about 4" and I can drive without being afraid of hitting anything with the pan, but...if I were to go any lower, then I would need the pan changed. I am just giving you food for thought because going back and changing it, itsnt cheap or much fun.

also while your in there, replace any worn wiring, paint/clean your engine bay and do anything that having the motor and trans out would make easier.

Good luck!
