What is this crap around my water neck?

I assume this is calcium from someone using tap water in the coolant but I don't know. I'd think my dad would know to use distilled but what is this stuff?

I removed the hose to the water neck and it leaves a residue that falls down onto the engine...I wipe it off with water and boom it's back once it dries.

Looks like to me u need to mix some anti freeze into the water. Pure water is useless in a vehicle just like no thermostat is not good to run without. I use regular water in all my vehicles and none of them have this. I use a good antifreeze mix in all of them also.

It happens when water runs into disimilar metals and is quite common.

If your neck is aluminum, it's probably aluminum oxide. That's aluminum's version of rust. If you wire brush it you'll probably find it has small pits. You should wire brush it and paint it before you reassemble it. It shouldn't cause any problems if you put in your proper 50/50 mix of antifreeze. I recommend Prestone only, most other kinds are junk and don't have the corrosion preventatives that prestone has. I don't represent prestone, this is just from my own personal experience.
