69 C-10 help in MD - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Long time follower, first time poster.

I have a 1969 C-10 which I am the third owner of. I found it at a yard sale near me a few years ago and my girlfriend at the time, now wife, bought it for me as a surprise gift. It has spent most of its life garage kept.

I want to do some preventive maintenance to it and was wondering if anyone knows any reputable shops in the Annapolis, MD area that specialize in classic vehicles. I wouldn't mind doing some of the work myself but my wife is against that unless I find someone that has been restoring vehicles for years. I am due for an oil change and would like to have the fuel filter replaced. I would also like to have the vehicle looked over to take care of any other upcoming issues there may be.

I am also having an issue where in the past few months, the gas gauge is no longer working correctly and stays on E or just above E. I figure it probably needs a new float.

I plan on going to some local car shows/gatherings to meet people who also have similar trucks to get their feedback and hopefully make a few friends.

That is one nice truck you have. You are a lucky man in two ways. You own a beautiful piece of history and you have a generous wife who must love her husband a lot.

Myself, I think you should get yourself a service manual and some tools and start learning about your truck. For a man, I do not believe that there is a greater since of pride than to know that you did it yourself. I say this because I was raised by someone (my late father) who taught me to do it myself and would never pay anyone to do anything. Yes mistakes happen along the way but that is how we all learn.

Gorgeous truck and as has been said you are a lucky man to have support from your wife regarding your truck. Get your self a service manual as these trucks are very basic and easy to work on and you will be amazed at how fast things come to you when you start poking and puttering on them. One last suggestion, drive the truck as much as you can !!!

Dropkick, check with local Car Clubs around your area. They can put you in touch with the right people.

I agree, time to invest in tools and service manuals, and dig in. There are plenty of us who will tell you what you need to know to do anything.

Great truck, awesome wife!!!!!! Does she have a sister just like her????????

Do you have any experience changing the oil on any other of your vehicles? Do you feel confident doing it? If yes, then, you'll have no problem what so ever with this truck. However, if your not that type of guy, that's fine too, then I'd find a shop that will take care of it for you, and in the mean time try to get to know some local people at car shows, etc. that may be willing to take you under the wing and show you around the underside of the truck. These things are really quite simple, However, if you were to doing something wrong, it could mess things up. I'm sure you wouldn't want that. Like others have said, a good service manual would be a good thing to pick up, plus this board is like owning a whole wall full of reference manuals. Just take your time and ask a lot of questions. Were all here to help you in any way we can.

Thank you everyone for the comments. I do plan on changing the oil myself as well as some of the other minor repairs. The gentleman who had the truck before me passed along a service manual. There is a slow oil leak which I would like to have taken care of. I replaced an oil pan on my first car so I'm sure I could do it on the truck, if I can pinpoint exactly where it is leaking from. I'm hoping to do some work to it in the winter when I will have a little more free time. I would like to have it restored professionally one day, but that is not going to be anytime soon.
