guage clock problem - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Ok. I've been looking at my truck trying to get the thing working 100% again. Ok heres the story. I was trying to put in a new dome light and I put in the wrong kind and it sent a surge through my truck. After that I cant get my radio, horn, or gauge clock to work. I looked at the wiring for the clock and there looks to be a ground wire that gos up to the top of the dash and then there is a wire that goes into the fuse box in a slot labeled bat. So between my clock and my battery is there a fuse somewhere like by the engine? Also where does that wire go? I cant trace any to the battery do they connect somewhere under the engine?

ok. I found a fuse that was blown out. I went to replace it and the clock and radio came on ( to late to test horn). First I heard the radio static then I started hearing weird stuff kind of like a cb or ham radio squak. So I turned off the truck but the speakes kept doing it. Then I started smelling something a little strange that might have been plastic so I quickly pulled the fuse out and I am going to wait until daylight to see what to do next.

You probally melted two wires together somewhere...

definate short somewhere and tomorrow ya will need to get under there and look where the wires melted hopefully youll be able to just replace that section of wire in the harness and didnt get nothing burnt up too bad in the harness
If ya need a section of harness i have a pretty complete one out of an 81

It only messes up when I turn the radio on. I think that my radio is fried because thats about where I traced the burning plastic smell. So now I have every thing working except the radio. I might just take out the radio when I get a chance and put in the new radio. Right now I have the radio jammed under the dash so as long as I keep it off everything works fine.
