This
I know a decent amount about motors but nothing about wether or not I should buy a block. Is a crack near or on the lifter journal a big deal? Is what this guy says about using jb weld true? I do want a 454 in my 69 steper one day.

Avoid cracks at all cost! Engines are soooo cheap now. Back in the day, I remember attempting to "save" blocks with jb weld, but it's just not worth it anymore. ESPECIALLY now that everyone is going LS, you can find an older block for extremely cheap.

2X what he said! A crack is a crack is a crack. JB Weld is not a fix it is a feel-good patch that does nothing structural for the block. It might help hold back the oil leak created by the crack, but will fail.
Cast iron is junk once cracked. Even the best welders cannot effectively weld cast iron. I'm fairly accomplished as a welder and will not attempt a repair on anything structural or stress loaded that is cast iron.

Nea! No cracks!! I've been down that road. Find you another BB. as stated above engines are cheaper than years past. Good luck with your decision.

to be fair I had a line in my signature for a few months asking about a bareblock and nobody pm'd me. so they arent that plentiful. I see them on CL a lot but they are never less than $900.
