The stock mc318 3 speed will not handle tons of punishment. If you want a bulletproof 3 speed, find a borg warner t-16. These are full synchronized 3 speeds that GM used behind many big block applications. Same length trans and with some minor mods, should still be able to use a column shift. I have pics of the t-16 in my build thread if you need them for reference. They have a 9 bolt side cover.

I see them complete and useable for around $300-$500. Keep eyes peeled on craigslist and ebay....where they normally pop up. Last one I saw was real nice and was $350 plus $80 for the ride.
Heres a couple of pics of mine....as you can tell from the pics, its a large case 3 speed. I also converted to hydraulic clutch. The 9 bolt side cover will be your 1st give away and of coarse you'll see T-16-X on the main case.

They are out there. Guy i got mine from had two of them, on the dayton ohio craigslist. Mine needs a rebuild before Ill trust it but for 75 i could pass it down.
