Rear differential swap

I have an 85 c10 with a 10 bolt. The rear is making noise so I need to replace gearset in it. I have a 98 2500 2wd truck I bought that I plan on pulling vortec from and sticking in the 85 with fuel injection and a LT4 hotcam upgrade.

My question is will the rear differential from the 98 fit in the 85? I know I will probably need axles but the 85 is peg leg and I believe the 98 is posi or limited slip so it would be a free unit basically. Just need to know if it will fit and what it will take to make it work?

Re: Rear differential swap

You need special conversion bearings to put that in your housing and also 30 spline axles to fit your housing. You would be better off welding new perches on the 98 rear end and installing the complete thing. It is about an inch wider if that isn't an issue.

Re: Rear differential swap

The 454 ss had a 14 bolt with 5x5, maybe the axles would fit ?

Re: Rear differential swap

good luck finding the 5x5 14 bolt sf axles if you have a 14semi floater. your a lot better off finding the correct unit. it will be a lot cheaper and nicer in the long run
