The truck I bought recently came with a tranny in it, the pan says 350 Turbo on it... How would I go about verifying that it really is as such?

The pan should be square but one corner is at an angle.

We have success, It is square with an angled corner on it.
Next question I have... If i get a mild 402 or 454 can I use this transmission?

It should handle a 402 with some care not to beat on it every time the light goes green, but I definitely wouldn't trust it behind even a stock 454. At that point, the TH350 should be upgraded, or possibly a swap to a TH400.

From one Okie to another. I always thought a turbo 400 worked best with a 454. My 2 cents.

Thanks for the input guys... I was thinking a Turbo400 would more than likely be needed but as I am not experienced with transmissions I figured it best to ask

I'm old school but a 700r4 is hard to beat.

A properly built TH350 would handle the power, but is it worth it? By the time you build the 350, you could buy a new 400. Only thing with the 400 is the extra rotating mass eats a little extra HP.

I grew up in Moore, Ok , but dad and i would go fishing up there and around stillwater when i was younger.

I agree the 400 turbo is the way to go with a big block, but you have to change drive shaft and yoke, and detent setup

I believe the yokes are different.

i had to shorten mine about 3 inched if i remember right, i never hooked up the detent switch back then, and i had to find a thick walled yoke,

My line of thinking is this. A TH350 is a great tranny in a light low geared car/truck. You may also consider a BUILT 700R4. I had one behind a 431 cu. in. Olds for quite a while. It didn't get hammered all the time but it did have some torque pushed to it. I used to boil 12x33x15 MS tires with it in the truck. The 700 is still in one piece. I attribute that to the big @$$ cooler that was installed with it.

I hope I didn't jynx it.

Longhorn70- I appreciate the info. I was planning on getting a 454 from a motor home as I have read on here where many had done so with good results. I do tend to be throttle heavy in my 89 with a 350, but I would have to me more careful with a big block local cops seem to love pulling over teenagers driving trucks
