I'm always going to answer with a BBC! A basic rebuild with some 781 or 049 oval port heads, proper cam to match heads, RPM Edelbrock airgap intake, and headers will get you to the 500hp mark ($2000 bucks or less). Plus it will have tire frying torque just off of idle for days! Spring for $1000 more and you could build a 496! Always my vote if doing a 454 rebuild.

Now you have me doing research on 496 build now...
